Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs returned to game action Thursday night following a six day break, hosting the Western Conference's Saginaw Spirit. Thursday's game marked the first of three this weekend for the IceDogs as they host Barrie on Friday and head to Owen Sound on Saturday.

Johnny Corneil was featured prior to the game as a potential key player who's taken on a leadership role offensively this season. Corneil's excellence continued as he opened the scoring at 10:13 of the first period from usual suspects Graham Knott and Ondrej Machala. The IceDogs penalty kill was put to the test in the first, taking three penalties in less than 10 minutes. Stephen Dhillon was equal to the task as he stopped all 12 shots he faced as the IceDogs maintained a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The parade to the penalty box continued in the second period for the IceDogs as they took another 4 minors. The penalty kill was absolutely outstanding, blocking shots and winning battles en route to a perfect period. The 'Dogs were rewarded for their hard work as Matthew Philip tallied his fourth of the season from Schaefer and Knott at 17:32 to make it 2-0. Just 54 seconds later, Ben Jones fed Hayden Davis with a beautiful breakaway pass as Davis made a fantastic dangle to beat the goaltender to make it 3-0. That lead would be sustained heading into the third period.

Saginaw found there stride early in the final period, scoring two goals in the first two minutes. Halfway through the period, the Spirit found the back of the net again to tie the game at 3. The IceDogs have proven to be resilient in the face of adversity, leaving fans with no doubt that they would respond accordingly. Oliver Castleman stepped up to the plate with a wraparound goal at 13:23 to regain a 4-3 IceDogs lead, with assists going to Ben Jones and Kyle Langdon. Chris Paquette added an insurance marker at 16:19 from Corneil to secure a 5-3 IceDogs win.
