IceDogs Barge Past Battalion in OT
February 6, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Niagara IceDogs took sole possession of second place in the Central Division after defeating the North Bay Battalion Saturday night with a 3-2 overtime victory.
The first period saw a very even matchup as both teams came out of the first twenty minutes tied 1-1, while also being even in shots on goal with 10 each. Stephen Harper scored the IceDogs goal when he sent a one-timer flying past the Battalion goaltender on the power play.
The IceDogs dominated the second frame, outshooting their opponent 18-5, but had the lone goal of the period scored against them, putting them in a 2-1 deficit heading into the final 20 minutes.
The Dogs tied the game up with another power play goal at the start of the third when Harper threaded a smooth pass to Anthony DiFruscia for the perfect redirect play. The game would go scoreless, forcing the two teams into overtime in order to find a winner. Stephen Harper decided to put the game in his hands and finish off his big night by netting the game winner in overtime to get the IceDogs the win. His 3 points helped the Dogs jump the Battalion in a tight knitted battle in the standings.
The IceDogs will be on the road to face the Hamilton Bulldogs on Wednesday with a special start time of 10:30 AM, and will return home next Sunday the 14th to face the Mississauga Steelheads in a 2:00 PM afternoon matchup on Valentine's Day. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at all IceDogs ticketing locations. Be sure to come out to see a special Valentine's event where IceDogs' history will be made.
