IceCaps Trumped by Devils 5-3

St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - Darcy Zajac had two goals and Jeff Frazee made 21 saves in the third period alone to guide the Albany Devils to a 5-3 win over the St. John's IceCaps Saturday night at Mile One Centre. The win gave the Devils a split of the two-game series.
Frazee made 42 saves in total as the IceCaps outshot the Devils 45-33 overall and 37-17 over the final two periods. Adam Larsson had a goal and an assist while Adam Henrique and Jay Leach each had a pair of assists for the Devils.
Mark Dekanich suffered just his second loss of the season for St. John's (7-8-0-0), allowing five goals on 33 shots. Ivan Telegin, Max Macenauer and Jason Gregoire scored for the IceCaps while Jason Jaffray picked up a pair of assists.
St. John's was once again shut out on the power play, going 0-for-8 with the man advantage. Albany finished 1-for-4.
Albany got off to a quick start with a pair of goals in the first 6:20 of the game. First, it was Jacob Josefson who deflected a Brandon Burlon point shot that went off the post and in. Just 43 seconds later, Zajac took a nice pass from Leach and headed towards the net on a two-on-one, snapping a shot that got by Dekanich to make it 2-0 before the game was seven minutes old.
St. John's cut the lead in half on Telegin's second of the season at 14:12 of the opening frame. Carl Klingberg took a pass from Eric O'Dell in the neutral zone and crossed over to the right side as he gained the Devils' zone. Klingberg fired a shot on goal that was stopped by Frazee but Telegin was trailing on the rush and cleaned up the garbage, banging in the loose puck to make it 2-1.
Albany restored the two-goal lead at 7:05 of the middle frame just seconds after receiving their third power play of the game. Henrique fed Larsson at the point and the Swedish defenceman one-timed a shot through traffic that found the back of the net to give the Devils a 3-1 advantage.
St. John's again pulled within one goal just after a power play expired at the 9:30 mark. Paul Postma fed Jaffray cross ice and the captain made a perfect slap pass to Max Macenauer in front. Macenauer redirected the pass into the net to make it 3-2.
Albany prevented St. John's from getting closer once again with a marker several minutes later. Henrique made a nice play in the neutral zone to chip the puck to a wide open Bobby Butler in the middle of the ice. Butler coasted in alone on Dekanich and beat the IceCaps netminder on the blocker side to give the visitors a 4-2 lead.
Like Friday's game, referee Tim Mayer waived off two goals due to incidental contact with goaltenders. The IceCaps looked to have pulled within one near the end of the second period on a power play, but Mayer deemed that Devils goaltender Frazee was interfered with and immediately waived it off, forcing the IceCaps to head into the third period down two goals.
Albany got another insurance marker midway through the third period on a nice effort by Zajac. Burlon made a tape-to-tape cross-ice pass to a streaking Zajac, who faked Dekanich and circled the net, sliding the puck into the open cage to make it 5-2.
The IceCaps tried to claw their way back and pulled within two at the 6:25 mark when Gregoire converted for his second of the season. Jaffray made a nice backhand pass to Gregoire on the right wing and the Winnipeg native one-timed the puck past Frazee to make it 5-3.
Then with less than two minutes to play and the IceCaps net empty, Albany was whistled for back-to-back penalties, giving St. John's a six-on-three advantage for nearly a minute. However, the home side could not solve Frazee, who made several stops to preserve the win for Albany. St. John's ended up outshooting Albany 22-8 in the final frame.
The IceCaps take to the ice at Mile One again on Tuesday and Wednesday when they host the Hamilton Bulldogs.
