St. John's IceCaps News Release

ST. JOHN'S, NL - Brayden Schenn scored the game winning goal in the third period as the Adirondack Phantoms came back from two goals down to beat the St. John's IceCaps 4-3 Saturday at Mile One Centre.

The Phantoms scored two goals in 51 seconds in the third period to earn a split of the two-game series at Mile One. Scott Munroe made 31 saves in the win, while Eddie Pasquale took the loss with a 28-save performance. St. John's received its offence from John Albert, Ivan Telegin and Zach Redmond.

The IceCaps got on the board first at 12:54 of the opening frame when Albert converted for his first goal of the season. After taking a faceoff to the left of Munroe, Albert stepped around his man and found the loose puck, quickly firing a wrist shot that got through the Phantoms netminder to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

There would be no more scoring in the first, but things picked up in the second period when the Phantoms were awarded a penalty shot after Will O'Neill took down Garrett Roe on a breakaway. Pasquale stoned Roe on the penalty shot, and then just 23 seconds later Ivan Telegin scored his first professional goal to give the IceCaps a two-goal cushion. Telegin took the puck behind the net and circled around to Munroe's left side, banking a shot off the goaltender and in for a 2-0 lead.

However, the lead did not last long, as some penalty trouble and a pair of IceCaps turnovers allowed the Phantoms to climb back in the game. Adirondack got the first one back at 9:22 of the period on a power play after Ben Maxwell took a cross-checking penalty. When the IceCaps failed to clear the zone, Danny Syvret fed Brandon Manning at the right point, and the young defenceman fired a one-timer that beat Pasquale on the blocker side, cutting the lead in half.

Just 27 seconds later, after Pasquale kicked out his right pad to save a goal, Shane Harper picked up the puck following a bad clearing attempt in front and the winger wristed a shot past the sprawled IceCaps goalie to tie the game at two.

The Phantoms took the lead at 12:06 after the IceCaps missed a chance at the other end. St. John's had a four-on-one break but was unable to generate a good scoring chance. The Phantoms then turned the puck up ice on a two-on-one and Zac Rinaldo snapped a wicked wrist shot by Pasquale on the far side, giving the visitors their first lead of the two-game series.

Then, just 51 seconds later, Schenn scored the eventual game-winner on a harmless looking play. Schenn burst down the left side and sent the puck towards the net along the ice, but the shot handcuffed Pasquale and ended up in the back of the net.

St. John's got one back on Zach Redmond's second of the season on a power play. Redmond wired a shot from the point that beat Munroe to bring the IceCaps to within one. Despite a late push to tie the game, the Phantoms were able to hold on for the 4-3 win, with Alex Burmistrov fanning on a one-timer at the buzzer.

The IceCaps take to the ice next on Tuesday night as they host Atlantic Division rivals the Portland Pirates at Mile One Centre.
