IceCaps Dumped by Bears

ST. JOHN'S, NL - The St. John's IceCaps dropped their fifth straight game with a 4-0 loss to the Hershey Bears Wednesday at Mile One Centre. The Bears leave St. John's having swept the two-game series.
Braden Holtby turned aside all 30 shots he faced while Jon DiSalvatore scored for the second straight game and added an assist. Ryan Potulny chipped in with a pair of helpers.
For St. John's, Mark Dekanich got his second straight start in goal and took the loss once again, making 21 saves on 25 shots. Will O'Neill and Zach Redmond led the club with five shots apiece.
Hershey struck first on a power play late in the first after Ray Sawada was whistled for interference. Potulny took the puck down low and fed DiSalvatore in the slot, who slipped a backdoor pass to Zach Hamill at the left side. Hamill one-timed the puck past Dekanich to give the Bears a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Bears carried the momentum into the second frame and added to their lead. After Sawada's penalty expired, Hershey made good on some good work down low as Alex Berry finished off a give-and-go play with Mike Carman. Berry one-timed the pass into the top corner of the net to make it 2-0 just 2:46 into the period.
Later in the period Hershey added to its lead on a goal by Mathieu Beaudoin. The Bears winger converted on a one-timer from the right faceoff circle to give the Bears a three-goal advantage.
Towards the end of the second the IceCaps got into penalty trouble and Hershey made good on a 4-on-3 power play. Taffe took the puck at the right side of the net and wired a pass cross-crease to Jon DiSalvatore who scored easily into the open net to make it 4-0 through two periods.
St. John's could not muster any offence in the third either, despite firing 13 shots on Holtby. The club went 0-for-2 on the power play while Hershey went 2-for-5 with the man advantage.
The IceCaps now hit the road for eight straight games beginning Saturday in Springfield to take on the Falcons at MassMutual Center. The club does not return home until January 4 and 5 when the Manchester Monarchs visit Mile One Centre.

Notes: Wednesday's game was the 54th consecutive sellout at Mile One Centre, tying the AHL's second longest sellout streak set by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins... The fifth straight loss is a new franchise record, breaking a four-game mark set last December... St. John's is just 3-10-0-0 when outshooting its opponent and 3-10-0-1 when allowing the first goal... Fans will be able to see several IceCaps road games over the holidays on television. The club's Dec. 21 and 28 contests against the Hamilton Bulldogs from Copps Coliseum can be seen live on Sportsnet (all regions) beginning at 9:00 p.m. NT, while the Dec. 22 matchup against the Toronto Marlies from Ricoh Coliseum will be shown on Rogers TV Cable 9 with a start time of 4:30 p.m.
