It was another close shave for the Indiana Ice as their three-game win streak was snapped with a 3-2 loss to the Youngstown Phantoms Saturday night from the Covelli Centre.
Goals by Vince Pedrie in the first period and Austin Hervey in the second gave Indy a solid 2-1 lead going into the third and final period, but a pair of unanswered goals in the remaining 20 minutes, but a stout Youngstown defense limited the Ice to only six scoring opportunities en route to their victory.
Indy goaltender Anderson Snair kept the Phantoms offense at bay for most of the contest, limiting Youngstown's scoring chances to only 16 shots with one finding twine.
After peppering Phantoms' goaltender Sean Romeo with 13 shots in the opening stanza, Indy's offense was only able to muster eight bullets in the final frame while maintain steady puck possession throughout the final 20 minutes.
The Ice built up a 10-4 shot advantage in the first 13 minutes of the game, allowing for Pedrie to pocket his first USHL goal. The recently-acquired defenseman fired a wrist shot to beat Romeo five-hole and put Indy up, 1-0.
Evancho knotted the game at the 6:23 mark of the second period before Hervey took a rebound in the low slot and found the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
Joe Fiala fed the puck across ice to Josh Jacobs, who rifled a shot from the point. Hervey, who was setting a screen for the Jacobs laser, picked up the puck and lifted it into the crease to regain a one-goal lead at 2-1 midway through the second period.
Youngstown's John Padulo and Kyle Connor both scored in the second period to give the Phantoms the 3-2 win.
The Indiana Ice prepare to close the curtain on 2012 this Sunday as the host the Chicago Steel from Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The game, presented by Reis Nichols Jewelers, is scheduled to begin at 6:05 pm. One lucky fan in attendance will have the chance to win free jewelry, courtesy of Reis Nichols.
