Ice Pilots fall to Cyclones in opener

October 20, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Pensacola Ice Pilots News Release

The Pensacola Ice Pilots surrendered a late second period goal and fell to the Cincinnati Cyclones 3-1 in the opener of the 2006-2007 ECHL season for both team.

There was no scoring in the first period as teams combined for nine total power plays. The Cyclones took a 1-0 lead in the second period, before the Ice Pilots got on the board and tied the game as Mario Joly tallied on the power play from Ryan Crane on the power play.

But the turning point in the game appeared to be with less than two minutes remaining, when the Cyclones connected on an even strength goal to take a 2-1 lead. Cincinnati added an insurance goal late in the third period shorthanded.

Another turning point in the game was the outstanding goaltending of Dov Grumet-Morris who made some huge saves especially in the second and third periods.

The Ice Pilots had a sold game in all departments as Jeff Pietrasiak played well in goal and faced just 22 shots.

There were 22 total power plays in the game as each team went 1 for 11.

Pensacola will head to Johnstown to face the Chiefs on Saturday night at 6 pm central time. Fans can tune into the game on the Ice Pilots Hockey Network Classic Country Am 1620 beginning with the pre game show at 5:40 pm. The puck drop takes place shortly after 6 pm.
