Ice Flyers Take Game 1 Of The Playoffs 3-1
April 1, 2010 - SPHL (SPHL) - Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
Matt Whitehead scored two goals the first coming just :15 seconds into the game, and Ryan Scott made 30 saves as the Pensacola Ice Flyers took game one over the Huntsville Havoc 3-1 Wednesday night.
Rob Campbell struck at the 8:19 mark in the first period to put the Flyers up by 2 goals at the end of the first period. However at the 9:06 mark in the second period Justin Rohr scored the only Havoc goal on a two-man advantage cutting the Flyers lead to 1. But at the 17:43 mark in a very physical third period Matt Whitehead solidified the lead and the game by scoring the game winner to give the Ice Flyers game one of the series beating the Havoc 3-1.
Matt Whitehead was named the number 1 star of the game with his 2 goals, while Ryan Scott was named the third star for only giving up one goal on 31 attempts by Huntsville. The Ice Flyers ended the game with 27 shots on goal. The Ice Flyers were 0-5 on the powerplay, but did an outstanding job on the penalty kill holding Huntsville to a 1-9 on the powerplay.
Coach Gordon was extremely pleased with the way his team played "It was a very physical game all night and we stuck with our game plan and did an outstanding job on the penalty kill. Also, Ryan Scott did a tremendous job in net." Coach Gordon feels that if his team stays focused and sticks with the game plan they put together that they match up well against any team in the league in a best of 3 series, and the Ice Flyers have an excellent opportunity in the playoffs.
The same two teams will meet again Friday night April 2nd at 7:05pm at the Hangar in Pensacola for game two. The Havoc are in a must-win in the best-of-three series. Game three, if needed will be Sunday afternoon at 5:00pm at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.
