Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

PENSACOLA, Fla. (Dec. 2, 2016) - The Pensacola Ice Flyers (5-5-3) looked to new faces to down the Mississippi RiverKings (9-5-0) in front of 3,664 fans on Teddy Bear Toss Night inside the Pensacola Bay Center on Friday. The Ice Flyers beat Mississippi by a 2-1 score for the second time is as many meetings.

After the Ice Flyers dominated that majority of the first period, Myles McCauley broke through with his first goal as an Ice Flyer and sent the stuffed animals flying. Andrew Schmit and Josh Cousineau picked up the assists on the goal that came with 6:13 left in the opening frame. Through the first 20 minutes, Pensacola led Mississippi 14-5 in shots on goal.

Mississippi tied the game up with 2:12 left in the second when Mike Moran put one past Matt Zenzola. The Ice Flyers almost got lead shortly thereafter but referee blew his whistle, likely because he lost sight of the puck, before RiverKings goalie Brad Barone had covered the puck.

The two teams played a tight, back-and-forth game for much of the third period before the Ice Flyers cracked through and broke the 1-1 tie. Patrick Megannety scored his second goal of the season, both coming against Mississippi, with just 1:22 left in regulation. Brent Tate and Aaron Clarke had the assists on what proved to be the game winning goal. With Barone pulled, the Ice Flyers had a chance to go up 3-1 when a Pensacola player received a pass and then shot it from just in front of the Ice Flyers' bench into the open net. The goal did not count as referee Andrew Bruggeman blew a whistle and called the Ice Flyers for Too Many Men with 40 seconds exactly remaining. Mississippi was unable to tie the game despite their six-on-four manpower advantage.

Zenzola stopped 22 of the 23 shots that the RiverKings put on net and improved his record to 3-2-2 on the 2016-17 season.

The Ice Flyers will be back in action tomorrow night as they finish off a home-and-home with these Mississippi RiverKings. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and fans interested in watching the game can do so at SPHLLive.com.
