Ice Bears Sweep Weekend Series with Louisiana

February 6, 2016 - SPHL (SPHL) - Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears scored three second-period goals to defeat Louisiana 6-3 Saturday night and sweep the weekend series over the IceGators.

The game featured five lead changes as Knoxville grabbed its seventh win in its last ten games. Louisiana has now lost three straight.

Knoxville caught a break for its first goal in the opening period when Corey Fulton dumped the puck into the Louisiana zone. The puck took an awkward bounce off the corner of the glass and skidded in front of the crease where John Clewlow tapped it in before IceGators netminder Adam Courchaine could find it.

Jake Hauswirth scored for the IceGators midway through the first when Blake Hietala fed him the puck into the slot. Luke Sandler got loose on a breakaway during a Knoxville power play and flipped the puck past Ice Bears goalie Brian Billet with 52 seconds left in the opening period.

The Ice Bears tied the game early in the second on a power play goal by Garrett Vermeersch. Then retook the lead when Vermeersch lifted a saucer pass through the slot and Andrew Bonazza slapped it out of the air past the blocker of Courchaine at 7:41. Louisiana tied it less than a minute later off a wrist shot from Brad Bourke before Corey Fulton's rebound goal at 12:44 gave Knoxville the lead again after two periods. The Ice Bears added two empty netters in the final minute from Vermeersch and Danny Cesarz.

Knoxville concludes a four-game homestead on Tuesday when Macon visits the Civic Coliseum. The IceGators travel to Columbus on Sunday for their third road game in three days.
