Ice Bears Sweep Macon in Weekend Series

January 9, 2016 - SPHL (SPHL) - Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

Knoxville, TN - Knoxville captain Jason Price had a goal and two assists as the Ice Bears beat the Macon Mayhem, 4-1 on Saturday night. The Ice Bears have won four of their last six and won consecutive games for only the second time this year.

The Ice Bears limited Macon to only 15 shots after allowing 36 the night before. Knoxville won that game 4-1 as well to sweep the weekend series with the SPHL's newest team.

Knoxville scored its first goal when Price retrieved the puck behind the Macon net, skated out towards the right circle, turned and quickly fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Macon goalie Curtis Martinu at 10:08 of the first. The Ice Bears scored with 1:13 remaining in the period when a loose puck slipped by Martinu and Todd Hosmer pounced on it.

Andrew Bonazza extended the lead at 5:33 of the second when he fired a puck off a sharp angle by the goal line, which deflected off Martinu and into the net. Shawn Skelly put Macon on the board six minutes later with a shot from the high slot that beat Bryan Hince and made the score 3-1 after two periods. Brad Pawlowski added an empty netter in the final minute for Knoxville.

Knoxville will next travel to Southaven next Friday before returning to the Civic Coliseum the following day for a home-and-home with the Mississippi RiverKings. The Mayhem will return to Georgia to host Peoria tomorrow. The Ice Bears are now 4-1 against Macon this season. Join the Ice Bears next Saturday for Rugrat Races sponsored by Food City.
