Ice Bears' Fall to RiverKings

February 5, 2016 - SPHL (SPHL) - Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

Knoxville, TN - Danny Cesarz scored the game-winner at 2:05 of the third and the Knoxville Ice Bears rallied to defeat the Louisiana IceGators 4-3 on Friday night. It was the first meeting between the two teams this season and first since the SPHL President's Cup semifinals last April.

Louisiana's Jake Hauswirth tied the game at 3 early in the third period on a power play goal from the right circle. Less than two minutes later IceGators forward Alex Hudson misplayed the puck in his own slot and Cesarz buried it to give Knoxville the lead for good.

Louisiana scored twice in 15 seconds early in the second period when Blake Hietala redirected a Mike Kavanagh shot over the right shoulder of Knoxville goalie Brian Billet. Luke Sandler followed up with a wrist shot from the left circle that beat Billet five-hole.

Knoxville responded just over a minute later when Garrett Vermeersch followed a Trevor Hertz shot with a rebound to pull the Ice Bears within one. Later in the second, Vermeersch tied the game with a slap shot from the left circle on a power play and Knoxville took the lead for the first time when Zack LaRue slid the puck past Louisiana's Brad Barone on a two-on-one.

The two teams will play again Saturday night at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum to cap off the weekend series.
