Ice Bears Fall to Cottonmouths 3-1

January 16, 2016 - SPHL (SPHL) - Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

Knoxville, TN - The lamp was lit, the horn sounded, the crowd rose to its feet in jubilation. Knoxville, trailing 2-1 late in the third period against Columbus, thought it had just tied the game against its long-time rival.

Except it hadn't.

John Clewlow's shot was disallowed and play continued without stopping. The Ice Bears were unable to put the puck back on net and the Cottonmouths added an empty netter in the final minute to seal a 3-1 win in the Civic Coliseum Saturday night.

Columbus snapped a four-game skid while Knoxville had its three-game win streak snapped. Clewlow's near-goal came off a shot from a sharp angle, appeared to hit the crossbar and the far post before exiting the crease. Knoxville skaters and fans believed it crossed the goal line before making its way out.

The Cottonmouths opened the scoring when they forced a turnover behind Knoxville's net. Columbus capitalized by finding Tyler Henry in front of the crease who slid the puck under the pads of Ice Bears goalie Brian Billett. Knoxville tied the game with 16 seconds left in the period when Doug Reid scored a power play goal off a rebound.

The only goal of the second period came at 13:16 when Columbus' Andy Bathgate skated the puck down the right wing off the rush. He sent a saucer pass from the right circle across the crease where Cody Freeman chipped it past Billett to give the Cottonmouths the lead again.
