Iowa Cubs News Release

New Orleans, LA - The Iowa Cubs (41-47) lost their fourth straight one-run game when the New Orleans Zephyrs (41-47) won 7-6 in 10 innings on a walk-off homer by Matt Dominguez tonight at Zephyr Field. The Cubs have lost a season-high four straight games for the third time this year. The Zephyrs lead this series 1-0 and lead the season series 5-4.

Cubs' starter Chris Rusin made his Triple-A debut tonight and gave up a home run to Tim Torres to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Rusin settled in after that and retired the next nine batters he faced.

The Cubs came back against Zephyrs' starter Tom Koehler in the fourth. With two outs, Bryan LaHair walked, Welington Castillo reached on an infield single, and Brad Snyder lined a homer to right to give the Cubs a 3-1 lead. It was Snyder's ninth home run of the season, but his first since June 19. The Cubs added to the lead in the fifth on a three-run homer by LaHair. It was his league-leading 25th home run of the season, one shy of his career-high.

Trailing 6-1, the Zephyrs rallied back in the bottom of the fifth against Rusin. After two singles to start the inning, Brad Davis lined a double into the left field corner. Jesus Merchan scored, but the Cubs cut down Jorge Padilla at the plate for the first out of the inning. After a pinch-hit single by Ryan Klosterman, Torres doubled to center to drive in two and the Cubs' lead was down to 6-4. After a groundout, Vinny Rottino doubled to the gap in right-center to drive in Torres and cut the Cubs' lead to one. That chased Rusin from the game. Robert Coello came in and got a groundout to end the inning.

The Cubs couldn't score against the Zephyrs' bullpen. Dan Jennings and Cesar Valdez each pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Koehler to get through regulation. Coello was solid in relief for the Cubs, but did give up the tying run in the eighth. WIth two on and one out, Merchan punched a single to right field. Snyder charged aggressively, but over ran the ball for an error that allowed Mike Cervanek to score from second base. The run was unearned against Coello.

Blake Parker replaced Coello in the ninth and worked a scoreless frame to force extra innings. Mariano Gomez retired the Cubs in order in the top of the 10th. Parker got the first two outs in the bottom of the inning before Dominguez connected on the game-winning shot to left. It was Dominguez' sixth home run of the season and his second game-winner against the Cubs. He hit a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning at Principal Park on June 30 that gave the Zephyrs a 7-6 win.

Parker (2-2) was charged with the loss. Gomez (1-3) was credited with the win.

The Cubs and Zephyrs continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00. RH Jay Jackson (4-7, 6.54) will start for the Cubs against LH Sean West (2-5, 7.23) for the Zephyrs. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:40 p.m.
