Hynick Records First Ever Perfect Game in Sky Sox History
July 1, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
Something special happened Tuesday night at Security Service Field as 7,651 fans witnessed the first ever perfect game thrown in Colorado Springs Sky Sox history taking place in game two of a double header.
Brandon Hynick (7-5) was the story of the night as he looked spectacular in completely dominating the Portland Beavers. Hynick was extremely efficient as he recorded the first ever perfect game in the history of the Sky Sox franchise. Hynick struck out six Beavers in route to his perfect game. The seventh and final inning was very dramatic as the Beavers were at the top of their order and were trying desperately to squeeze out a hit before the inevitable would take place. Leadoff hitter Brett Dowdy hit a sharp grounder to Sox third baseman Jeff Baker, who just barely threw out Dowdy at first. Right fielder Mike Baxter followed with a hit that seemed like it would get by a sliding Eric Young Jr., but amazingly Young Jr. came through with a diving stop to throw out Baxter. The final out was recorded as Hynick got third baseman Craig Stansberry to fly out to right fielder Dan Ortmeier giving Hynick his milestone achievement.
The Sky Sox did manage to muster some offense to help Hynick secure the perfect game. The Sox scored one in the bottom of the third inning as Mike McCoy hit a sacrifice fly off Portland starter Wade LeBlanc (1-5), bringing home Jonathan Herrera to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. The Sox would add one more in the bottom of the sixth as Herrera drew a walk with the bases loaded bringing home Baker to give the Sky Sox a 2-0 lead that would eventually prove to be the final score.
Game one was resumed in the bottom of the fifth inning after it was suspended due to rain on Monday night with the Portland Beavers leading 7-6.
The Beavers took advantage right away and didn't look back as they scored two in the sixth inning when short stop Sean Kazmar hit a two-run single giving them a 9-6 lead.
The Sky Sox didn't score until the eighth where they put up two runs closing the Beavers lead to 9-8. The Beavers would add one more in the ninth to extend their lead to 10-8. Then they sent out Edwin Moreno who got his ninth save of the season sitting the Sox down in order in the ninth. Adam Eaton (3-1) picked up the loss for the Sky Sox as he threw five innings giving up seven runs on eight hits recording five strikeouts. Jon Ellis (7-3) picked up the win for the Beavers throwing a scoreless fifth inning striking out one.
The Sky Sox took the series from Portland 3-1 and will face the Salt Lake Bees tomorrow at 7:05 PM in a game that will feature right-hander Jason Hirsh (5-4, 6.06) of the Sox versus righty Brad Salmon (3-2, 4.58) of the Bees.
