Hurricanes Get Past Rebels 4-3 in a Shootout

January 8, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Red Deer Rebels News Release

The two hottest teams in the WHL met in Red Deer Friday night as the Rebels and Hurricanes continued their battle for first place.

FIRST PERIOD

The Rebels have had their troubles scoring on the Hurricanes this season, but they broke through early on in this game. Braden Purtill rang a shot off the post and the puck lay loose in the crease before Reese Johnson banged the puck home for his 2nd goal of the year. 1-0 Rebels 2:19 into the game.

Lethbridge tied the game three minutes later thanks to their league-leading powerplay unit. Giorgio Estephan hit the crossbar with a shot, the puck then hit Rylan Toth before landing on the stick of Tyler Wong, who tapped home his 25th goal of the year making it 1-1.

Red Deer regained the lead at 8:27 when Michael Spacek, playing his first game with the Rebels since returning from the World Juniors, put home his own rebound for a powerplay goal, his 11th on the season overall. Evan Polei and Hagel assisted on the 2-1 Rebels goal.

With Polei gone from the game due to a kneeing major, the Hurricanes lethal powerplay struck again to tie the game once again. Egor Babenko fired one past Rylan Toth for his 20th of the year, tying the game 2-2.

SECOND PERIOD

No scoring.

THIRD PERIOD

The Rebels got back on even terms when a shot from Adam Helewka somehow made it past four bodies and into the Hurricanes net for the 20-year-old's 20th goal of the year. Haydn Fleury and Conner Bleackley assisted on the 3-3 goal which came 7:44 into the third period.

OVERTIME

The Rebels found themselves with a power play late in the extra frame but were unable to capitalize. A shootout would be needed to decide this game.

SHOOTOUT

Egor Babenko shot first for Lethbridge and ended up scoring the lone goal of the shootout to give the Hurricanes a 4-3 victory in an absolute thriller at the Enmax Centrium.
