Huntsville tops Asheville, 111-96

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., March 29 – The Huntsville Flight jumped out to a 32-14 first-quarter lead, and cruised to a 111-96 win over the Asheville Altitude in National Basketball Development League action at the Von Braun Center.

AshevilleÂ’s (24-19) only lead came on Kirk PenneyÂ’s lay up on the gameÂ’s opening possession. The Flight responded with a 22-foot jumper from Cedric Henderson, followed by a 20-footer from Austin Nichols, and sizzled through the rest of the quarter. Huntsville (24-19) connected on 12 of 22 field goal attempts (54.5%) in the quarter, led by center Earl BarronÂ’s nine points and six rebounds in the period.

Asheville managed to get as close as 12 points at 106-94 in the final minutes, but by that point the game had been decided. The FlightÂ’s biggest lead of 34 points came early in the second quarter when Ronald Blackshear nailed a 26-foot jump shot for a 40-16 advantage.

Henderson led the Flight with 23 points, while Barron finished with 21 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Jason Miskiri added 18 points and a game-high eight assists, and Bryant Matthews chipped in 17.

Ron Slay scored a game-high 28 for Asheville, and Terrence Shannon finished with 20. The Altitude were without Tony Dobbins, who did not travel with the team, and Lenny Stokes, who sat out with an injury. The loss was AshevilleÂ’s fourth in their last seven games.

The Flight won for the sixth time in seven outings, and moved into a tie with the Altitude for third place in the NBDL. With five regular season games remaining, Huntsville remains within striking distance of first-place Columbus (26-16). The Flight and the Riverdragons will square off in a two-game, home-and-home series beginning this Friday in Huntsville. Huntsville leads the season series 6-2.

Asheville begins a two-game, home-and-home series with Roanoke Friday night in Roanoke. The Dazzle lead that series 5-3.
