October 11, 2012 - National Lacrosse League (NLL) - Rochester Knighthawks
When Matt Hummel heard his name announced as the Rochester Knighthawks' fourth round pick, he was left "speechless".
" It has been my childhood dream to be selected to play in the NLL, but I never guessed I would have been picked by the NLL Champion Rochester Knighthawks. Growing up I watched many NLL games and Rochester was always an elite team, so to have the opportunity to step on the floor with top-caliber players is an opportunity of a lifetime. The only NLL jersey I have ever had is a Rochester Knighthawks jersey," said Hummel.
Fortunately for Hummel, the Knighthawks saw talent in the Kitchener, Ontario native that they were looking to add to their team. The former Mercyhurst University midfielder and MSL Kitchener-Waterloo transition man was selected 38 th overall in the NLL Draft. Hummel is looking forward to taking advantage of every minute of this opportunity and applying his experiences in college lacrosse and the MSL in order to have a successful season with the Knighthawks.
Hummel commented on this stating, "My collegiate career at Mercyhurst University has made a huge impact on my indoor play. At Mercyhurst, the emphasis was on team play and being in excellent condition. I have continued to work out, run and shoot so that when camp opens I will not miss a beat. Playing for the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks of the MSL has allowed me the opportunity to work with dedicated coaches and players from the NLL so I already understand what it will take to be successful in Rochester."
Hummel began his collegiate career in 2011 as a redshirt freshman on the Mercyhurst University men's lacrosse team and began playing for the team his sophomore year. In his sophomore year, Hummel played in all 14 matches and recorded 15 goals, the third most on the team. He also recorded 7 assists and a total of 22 points and 26 shots on goal during the 2012 season. In 2012, Hummel also collected 10 ground balls and forced 18 turnovers.
After his impressive season at Mercyhurst, Hummel moved on to play for the Kitchener-Waterloo Braves of the MSL for the summer and now he is on the path to living out his dream of becoming a NLL player. Hummel's main goal right now is to focus on making it onto the Rochester Knighthawks roster is excited to do so alongside some of the best players in the NLL.
Hummel stated, "I am looking forward to playing with and against the best lacrosse players in the world. Players like Cody Jamieson, Steven Keogh and Craig Point, just to name a few on Rochester Knighthawks roster. I have played against them in the MSL, but I would much rather be on the same team as them rather than play against them."
With the stacked roster that the World Champion Rochester Knighthawks already have and with Open Tryouts coming up, the players selected in the 2012 NLL Draft will be heavily competing for roster spots. Hummel is diligently training in order to get in the best physical shape as possible and to prove to the Knighthawks that he deserves a spot on the team. He is grateful for what lies ahead of him and is looking forward to making his childhood dreams come true.
