Hults Commits to Penn State

March 30, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Madison Capitols News Release

MADISON, WI - The Madison Capitols, a member of the United States Hockey League, announced defenseman Cole Hults has committed to Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania.

"I'm really proud of him," said Capitols Head Coach and General Manager Garrett Suter. "He's worked extremely hard on and off the ice, and deserves this opportunity. It's rewarding for us to have a kid like Cole who's come up through our AAA program, on to the USHL team, and now to a Division I school. There's (been people) throughout his whole life that have said he wasn't quite good enough or (they) weren't sure if mentally he could handle things, and he's proved and continues to prove that he is one of the best defenseman in the USHL. I'm just really proud of him."

Hults, 18, has appeared in 54 games with the Capitols this season. The 6-foot, 189-pound native of Stoughton, WI, leads Madison with 25 assists, 31 points (6-2531), and 95 penalty minutes. He also leads the Capitols with 12 power play assists. Hults will join Penn State University for the 2017-18 season.

"(Penn State) is a great school," exclaimed Hults. "When I went on my visit, I really got a sense of the culture there, and I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. They have one of the best, if not the best facilities in college hockey that I've seen. After meeting the coaching staff, I knew they were the kind of coaches I wanted to play for.

'They're kind of a new team in the college hockey world, and to be able to come in and help lay a foundation for the years to come was something that I thought would be special. It's part of the Big 10, so to be able to come in and play Wisconsin, Minnesota, the teams I grew up watching would be something I knew I wouldn't want to miss out on. Plus, my entire family is from the Madison area so for them to be close to those away games to come watch me means a lot to me."

"To be able to go to college next year was something I felt that I was ready for and to make that next step in my hockey career," continued Hults. "I owe a lot of my success to my coaches and my teammates in Madison. It was very special to play juniors here in Madison and will forever remember my years as a Madison Capitol. I'm very excited for this opportunity and can't wait to get started."

The Capitols return to the Veterans Memorial Coliseum at Alliant Energy Center to take on the Green Bay Gamblers for the Wiener Dog Races at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, March 31.
