Hounds Give "Too Much Respect;" Fall to Sting

February 10, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Soo Greyhounds News Release

After holding the lead for forty-nine minutes and fifty-three seconds on Wednesday, the Soo Greyhounds saw the Sarnia Sting score twice in a span of just under six minutes to escape the Lock City with their fourth win in as many games against the locals.

For Head Coach Drew Bannister, the main cause of the contest was respect.

"They're a very good hockey team. I thought we gave them too much respect. When you give a team like that, that is as talented as they are, the time and space in the D zone they're going to score goals and that's what they did tonight" he began.

"I thought we got too loose and we just gave them too much time and space and it was just too much respect" continued Bannister.

The Greyhounds led a strong start into the contest as the opening trio of ZACH SENYSHYN, GABE GUERTLER and BLAKE SPEERS opened the game spending the opening minute in the offensive zone for the Hounds.

Immediately after though, it would be the Sting that countered with a similar type effort.

BRYCE YETMAN would then skate in on a pair of breakaways before the game was even seven minutes old while the game remained scoreless.

LIAM HAWEL sprung the Whitby, ON product (Yetman) in initially just three minutes in only to be foiled by a glove save by Justin Fazio before JACK KOPACKA followed suit and set-up Yetman as the puck rolled away at the 6:21 mark.

At the other end of the ice BRANDON HALVERSON stood tall himself, putting a left pad on Devon Paliani with under five minutes remaining in the period to keep the two teams scoreless.

Halverson, who later would be named the game's 1st star, he continued his solid play as the Traverse City, MI product entered the night with a 2.54 GAA and .920 SV% in his last fifteen games.

"He was outstanding. To me we wasted a very good performance by our goalie tonight" commented Bannister post-game.

Early in the second period the roller coaster night for the Hounds BRYCE YETMAN continued as he would leave the game and not return in what the team is calling a precautionary measure.

And while the Hounds outshot Sarnia 16-12 in the period they would also score the first and only goal.

At 17:06, ZACH SENYSHYN sped past a fallen Sting defenceman up the right wing and took the puck to the net before rifling a shot over the glove hand of Fazio for the 1-0 lead.

For Senyshyn it was his 33rd goal of the season and his 4th in the last five games played.

Hounds led 1-0 through two periods of play.

In the third, the Sarnia Sting significantly took control of the Greyhounds end of the ice and would be rewarded around the midway point.

At 9:53, Travis Konecny let a low shot along the ice go that flowed through all traffic in front and beat HALVERSON to tie the game at 1-1.

Then with the Hounds caught standing, Jordan Kyrou notched a shot high blockerside at 15:52 on the Stings 35th shot of the game, and it would stand as the game winner.

"I don't think it was anything they did, I think it was us. We just sat back." began Bannister when asked about Wednesday's opposition.

"There was two shifts in the third period where we just sat back and let them do whatever they want. Players that they have, you give them time and space they are eventually going to create scoring opportunities and that's what we did, gave them time and space" he concluded.

The loss snapped the Hounds four-game winning streak while bringing their overall record to 24-21-5-1 on the season, staying with 54 points.

Combined with Owen Sounds home ice loss to Barrie, the Hounds continue the single point advantage for 6th in the Western Conference heading into Friday's meeting with the Attack.
