Hounds Acquire Hartwick From Ottawa

June 1, 2010 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) - Ottawa 67's News Release


The Soo Greyhounds Hockey Club announced a trade earlier today with the Eastern Conference's Ottawa 67s,

In the deal, the Hounds acquire left defenseman DEREK HARTWICK in exchange for a 2nd and 4th round pick in the 2011 OHL Priority Selections.

"We are very pleased to acquire Derek today. We feel he is an excellent fit with our hockey team at this point" commented GM Dave Torrie.

Hartwick was originally selected in the 2nd round (23rd overall) of the 2008 OHL Priority Selection and recently completed his 2nd season in the OHL where he had 2 goals and 4 assists (6 points) in 59 games played.

The Granton, ONTARIO native stands 6.02, while weighing 190 lbs.

"As a left-shooting defenseman with good size and mobility, we feel he can step into a prominent role this season, and be part of our future also. We have followed Derek's progression since his Minor Midget draft year and we feel strongly that he and our club will benefit from this change and a new beginning" concluded Torrie.

Hartwick, will join an expected 50 other hopefuls at the team's main training camp that will start at the beginning of September.

STAPLETON NOT RETURNING In a separate announcement, the Greyhounds have announced that Assistant Coach Mike Stapleton will not be returning to the Club for the 2010/2011 season.

Stapleton, recently completed his 2nd season behind the Hounds bench, and 4th in the Ontario Hockey League.

"Mike has been a tremendous asset over the past 2 seasons and made significant contributions to the program" started Torrie.

Regarding the direction the team will go as a result, the team's GM stated the following; "At this point our organization will take some time to evaluate our coaching situation and what set-up we feel gives our players' and organization the best chance to be successful. At this point we anticipate that current Assistant Coach Nick Warriner will remain with the organization and assume even greater responsibilities. Over the next few weeks myself, Denny and Nick will discuss the situation and evaluate the direction we want to move forward with."

The Greyhounds would like to wish Mike and his family all the best and thank them for their time as part of the Greyhound organization.
