Hot Rods Hold off Dragons in Friday Battle
April 19, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1) - Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-The Bowling Green Hot Rods scored three runs in the second inning and held off a Dayton Dragons comeback effort on the way to a 5-2 victory on Friday night at Fifth Third Field. The win was the 10th in the last 11 games for Bowling Green and improved their record to 11-3. Dayton fell to 4-10 with the loss.
The Hot Rods took advantage of three Dayton errors in the second inning and all three runs were unearned. Patrick Leonard and Marty Gantt each provided RBI singles in the inning.
The Dragons scored two runs in the fourth to pull to within one run. Jesse Winker doubled to left field to start the rally and scored on a single to center by Seth Mejias-Brean to make it 3-1. Jeff Gelalich followed with a double to left to move Mejias-Brean to third with one out. Junior Arias grounded out to second base to bring in Mejias-Brean and make it 3-2.
But the Dragons did not score over the rest of the night, collecting just two hits over the final five innings. Bowling Green added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to close out the scoring.
The Dragons finished with seven hits. Winker enjoyed his first three-hit game of the season. Gelalich had two hits to extend his hitting streak to seven straight games and lift his batting average to .300.
Dragons starting pitcher Sal Romano (1-2) allowed three unearned runs on seven hits over four and one-third innings. He walked two and struck out one to suffer the loss. Jesus Adames replaced Romano and worked two and one-third innings, allowing one run. He surrendered four hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Pedro Diaz replaced Adames in his Dragons debut. Diaz worked two and one-third innings, allowing three hits and one run with a walk and a strikeout.
Tommy Coyle led a 14-hit Bowling Green attack with three hits including a double. Hot Rods starting pitcher Dylan Floro (1-0), who had not allowed a run over his first two starts covering 10 innings, earned the win. He pitched five innings, surrendering two runs on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Nick Sawyer worked the final two innings for the save.
The Dragons got the tying run to the plate with one out in the bottom of the ninth after a walk to Mejias-Brean and a single by Gelalich, but Sawyer got Arias to pop to shallow center and Tanner Rahier to foul to the catcher to end the game.
