Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SAINT JOHN - Sam Povorozniouk scored twice and added two assists and Nathan Noel capped his own four-point night with an empty-net goal to lead the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 5-2 victory over the Halifax Mooseheads Saturday at Harbour Station.

Captain Spencer Smallman added a goal and two assists to give his line 11 points on the night as Saint John (27-13-3-0) won its seventh game in a row. Thomas Chabot also scored.

Maxime Fortier and Joel Bishop replied for Halifax (15-24-5-1).

The Sea Dogs opened the scoring ten-and-a-half minutes into the opening period.

Nathan Noel carried the puck from the left side over to the right circle, and then found Povorozniouk with a cross-ice pass. The American-born winger snapped a one-timer from the inside edge of the left circle past a helpless Kevin Resop in the Mooseheads' goal.

Povorozniouk netted a power play goal nearly four minutes later to double the lead. He finished off a terrific passing play, taking a feed from Noel in the middle of the slot and firing the puck into an open net.

Saint John extended its lead to 3-0 seven minutes into the second period.

Povorozniouk took a drop pass in the slot and rifled a wrist shot that was stopped by Resop with his blocker. Smallman one-timed the rebound past the goalie's glove into the top corner.

But Halifax got on the board less than two minutes later with a power play goal of its own when a scramble in front of the Sea Dog goal saw Fortier chip a loose puck past the blocker of Saint John goalie Alex Bishop.

The Mooseheads thought they had closed the gap to one with under nine minutes left in the third period when Otto Somppi had three chances to jam a loose puck past Bishop's left skate. The puck did eventually enter the net, but the goal was waived off on video review.

Moments later, Chabot made it 4-1 for the home side, sending a long, high wrist shot past the blocker of a screened Resop.

Halifax responded just 14 seconds later.

Joel Bishop threw a puck from the left corner toward the net that snuck between Alex Bishop's right skate and the right post to make it a 4-2 game.

Resop went to the bench for an extra skater with more than a minute left, but Noel wrapped up the scoring with an empty-net goal with 29 seconds remaining.

Alex Bishop earned the win with 30 saves. Resop took the loss with 36 stops.

Povorozniouk's two goals and four points led to a first-star selection while Noel's goal and four points made him second star. Smallman was named third star with a goal and two assists in front of 2,902 fans in attendance.
