Hooks Get to Hernandez in 7th
April 25, 2013 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release
It sure wasn't Wednesday night at Citibank Ballpark. The RockHounds took a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning, but Corpus Christi scored four times in the "stretch" inning and went on to defeat the 'Hounds, 6-3, Corpus' second straight win in the series.
Carlos Hernandez pitched six shutout innings to open the game, out-dueling the Hooks' Asher Wojciechowski, who entered the game with a 0.00 earned run average and a scoreless streak of 31 innings (dating back to the 2012 season). The 'Hounds broke that streak in the third inning on a Darwin Perez walk, a hit-and-run single to right-center by Jake Goebbert, and a sacrifice fly from Anthony Aliotti.
Perez would set the table again in the fifth, this time with a leadoff triple, and scored on D'Arby Myers' fielder's choice.
Hernandez allowed just two hits and one walk over his first six innings, striking out eight, before the Hooks busted loose. A one-out double by Corpus Christi's George Springer started the Hooks' big inning in the seventh, with five consecutive batters reaching base. The Hooks took a 3-2 lead on Jiovanni Mier's two-run single in the four-run seventh and Carlos Perez added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run home run over the left field wall in the eighth inning.
Kibbles & Bits
- While the RockHounds snapped Asher Wojciechowski's scoreless streak, the right-hander (acquired by the Houston Astros last July from Toronto in a 10-player trade) set a Corpus Christi franchise record with 33.1 consecutive scoreless frames.
- Former Hook Jake Goebbert extended his hit streak to 10 games, going 2-for-3 with two walks. Jake, who played with Corpus in 2011 and 2012, is 6-for-9 in the series (two doubles, a home run, and three runs batted in) and 13-for-36 (.361) in the 10-gamer. He came to Oakland from the Houston Astros this spring in exchange for pitcher (and former San Antonio Mission) Travis Blackley.
- The South Division tightened up as San Antonio defeated Frisco, 6-3, forging a three-way tie at the top with the RoughRiders, RockHounds, and Hooks each 11-8 and San Antonio two games back at 9-10.
- Strange Days: After winning the opener of the four-game series, the RockHounds have dropped two straight to Corpus Christi, leaving the 'Hounds 3-5 at home compared to an 8-2 road record.
- The Hooks and 'Hounds meet "Thirsty" Thursday at 7:00, followed by a four game set with the San Antonio Missions (Friday-Monday).
