Homers Power Wings to 6-2 Win

July 20, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

Daniel Palka and Tommy Field homered, backing a solid start by Nick Greenwood in a 6-2 Red Wings win over the Durham Bulls Wednesday afternoon at Frontier Field.

The Wings open a two-game set with the Syracuse Chiefs Thursday night at 7:05 p.m., with baseball's Hit King Pete Rose signing autographs before the game; a limited number of autograph tickets remain. Complete promotions details below...

Greenwood made the spot start for the Wings Wednesday, in place of Logan Darnell (sore shoulder). The Red Wings entered play Wednesday tied with Toledo as the league's best defensive teams, despite costly errors that contributed to extra inning losses to Durham Monday and Tuesday. A pair of one-out singles off Greenwood and a fielding error by Adam Brett Walker put runners at second and third. Greenwood kept his composure, striking out the next batter and getting a groundout to strand the runners.

Bulls starter Jake Faria was coming off his least effective start of the season, having allowed seven hits and seven earned runs in less than an inning July 15 in Syracuse. James Beresford and Jorge Polanco picked up one-out singles in the bottom of the first inning, giving the Wings an early scoring opportunity. The hit extended Beresford's hitting streak to nine games. When Palka followed with a single up the middle, the Wings had an early 1-0 lead. Walker atoned for the fielding error with an RBI double, putting the Wings ahead 2-0.

In the bottom half of the third inning Palka launched his fourth homer on the season with the Red Wings over the wall in center to extend the lead to 3-0.

Greenwood was able to settle down after the first inning, allowing as many baserunners in the second, third and fourth combined as he did in the first. The fourth was a quick inning for Greenwood thanks in large part to a slick double play started by Wilfredo Tovar.

Field was able to give his starter another run of support in the Red Wing half of the fourth inning, sending his seventh homer of the season into the Durham bullpen to bring the lead to 4-0. John Ryan Murphy laced a two-out double down the right field line giving the Red Wings another chance to extend their lead. Darin Mastroianni extended his hitting streak to six games when he reached base in the fourth on an infield single, but the score remained 4-0.

In the fifth inning, the Bulls put together back-to-back hits for the first time since the first inning and had runners on second and third with none out. It looked as if Greenwood would work out of trouble again with a strikeout and popout, but a two-out single from Nick Franklin ended that. The hit from Franklin scored both runners, cutting the Red Wing lead in half to 4-2.

In the sixth inning Ryan O'Rourke came on to replace Greenwood. The line for Greenwood was five innings pitched, seven hits allowed, two earned runs and five strikeouts with no walks. He threw a total of 62 pitches with 45 of those being strikes.

O'Rourke hit a batter and gave up a two-out double, giving Durham men on second and third with an opportunity to even the score. But O'Rourke was able to work around the runners keeping the score 4-2 in favor of the Red Wings.

Walker led off the sixth with a walk and scored one batter later thanks to an RBI double down the left field line from Field. The Walker run extended the lead for the Wings to 5-2. This ended the day of the Durham starter Faria, replaced by righty Danny Farquhar. He retired the first two batters he faced but Mastroianni lined a double down the line in left to make the score 6-2 for the Wings.

Faria finished his afternoon throwing 5.0+ innings giving up nine hits, six earned runs and two walks while striking out six. He ended up throwing 99 pitches and 63 of them were for strikes.

O'Rourke allowed just a hit and struck out one in two scoreless innings, and has not allowed a run over his past six outings (six innings pitched). Alex Wimmers worked the eighth and ninth innings, allowing just a walk while striking out three.

The Wings out-hit the Bulls 10-8. Field's homer extended his hitting streak to six games.

Winning Pitcher: Nick Greenwood (2-1) Losing Pitcher: Jake Faria (1-2) Save: none

NOTES: The Red Wings improved to 39-15 when scoring first.
