San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE, CA - The San Jose Giants lost a fourth consecutive game on their homestand with a 7-1 series-opening defeat to the Modesto Nuts on Monday evening at Municipal Stadium. San Jose (42-59 overall, 12-19 second half) lost for the ninth time in their last 12 home games overall.

Pablo Sandoval started at third base for the Giants on Monday in the third game of his stint with San Jose. The three-time World Series champion played the first six innings of the contest and finished 1-for-2 at the plate with a single and a walk.

The Nuts jumped out early scoring three runs in the top of the second against Giants starter Mark Reyes to take a 3-0 lead. After Reyes retired the first two batters of the frame, Joe DeCarlo and Jordan Cowan produced back-to-back singles and then Ryan Scott walked to load the bases. Gianfranco Wawoe was up next and he smacked a line drive into the right center field gap for a triple. The hit scored all three runners giving Modesto a 3-0 lead.

The Nuts pushed across another run in the third against Reyes to stretch their advantage to 4-0. Kyle Lewis led off with a single before consecutive two-out singles from DeCarlo and Cowan loaded the bases. Scott then produced the fourth single of the inning as he brought home Lewis to make it 4-0.

San Jose's only run of the night came in the bottom of the fourth. Bryan Reynolds started the inning with a single before Sandoval grounded a single through the hole on the right side to put runners on the corners. Aramis Garcia then popped out before a Ryan Howard groundout scored Reynolds to bring the Giants to within 4-1.

San Jose threatened in the bottom of the fifth, but left two runners in scoring position as Modesto maintained their three-run cushion. With two outs, Jalen Miller drew a walk. Ronnie Jebavy then singled into shallow center advancing Miller to third. Jebavy would take second on the throw to third base, but both runners were stranded when new pitcher Bryan Bonnell struck out Reynolds to end the inning.

The Nuts then scored twice in the top of the sixth before a single tally in the seventh to take control of the game. In the sixth, Cowan and Wawoe both singled before a double steal put runners on second and third with one out. Eric Filia then hit a sharp grounder to second that was knocked down by Miller. The Giants second baseman, however, threw wildly to first for an error as both runners would come home for a 6-1 lead. Filia was credited with one RBI on the play.

Modesto capped the scoring for the night in the top of the seventh as Luis Liberato led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Joey Curletta's sacrifice fly to make it 7-1.

Bonnell (3-2) earned the win out of the Nuts bullpen after tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Bonnell, who kept the Giants off the board in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings after recording the pivotal final out in the bottom of the fifth, gave up one hit and struck out five. Modesto starter Tyler Jackson pitched 4 2/3 innings in his California League debut yielding one run and four hits. He walked one and struck out two.
