Salt Lake Bees News Release
The Salt Lake Bees picked up victory number 25 of the season after defeating the Memphis Redbirds 7-5. It took just six pitches for the Bees to get on the board. Todd Cunningham led off the game with a triple to right-center field. Two pitches later, Ji-Man Choi doubled in the same exact place to drive him in. Jefry Marte joined the party with a single up the middle to give the Bees back-to-back-to-back hits. After a Kubitza strikeout, Sherman Johnson lined one to the first baseman who stepped on first base to end the early threat. Bees starting pitcher Kyle McGowin (2-1, 3.47) took the early run support and ran with it to earn his second win of the season after delivering 6 innings pitched, 3 strikeouts, and 3 runs scored. McGowin is undefeated at home so far this season and after tonight's performance has lowered his home ERA to 3.00.
"I pretty much have the same approach I had in double-A," McGowin said. "(I've used) a couple things I learned from the big-league camp and just have gone after hitters. The defense made some nice plays behind me tonight."
Salt Lake exploded in the second inning for five runs on five hits, two walks and an error. Sherman Johnson contributed with a 2-RBI single while Quintin Berry and Juan Graterol added RBI's of their own. The Bees bats have been strikingly hot since returning from Oklahoma City, combining for 21 runs and 33 hits over the previous two games. Memphis threatened in the top of the 8th inning loading the bases with no outs, but Cody Satterwhite came in to end the threat. Satterwhite has yet to allow a run in the 7th, 8th or 9th innings this year and holds a team-best 0.90 ERA. Javy Guerra closed the door in the 9th inning to pick up his sixth save of the season. The Bees have 16 saves on the season, after finishing 2015 with only 32 and not collecting their 16th save of the season until July 18th, 2015. Salt lake has won their last nine home contests and are just two shy of the franchise-record of 11 which was set from June 5-25 in 2005.
