St. Lucie Mets News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Daytona Tortugas launched a pair of home runs that helped propel them to a 4-1 win over the St. Lucie Mets on Saturday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
Blake Butler hit the first pitch Joseph Shaw threw in the first inning for a long home run that tied the game 1-1.
In the third inning Shed Long just cleared the wall in left with a two-run homer that put the Tortugas ahead 3-1. Daytona added an unearned run on a two-out RBI single by Reydel Medina in the eighth.
The Mets scored the game's first run on a two-out single from Nick Sergakis in the first inning, but that would be the highlight for the Mets offense. Mets hitters ended up striking out 14 times and going 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position. The Mets stranded 11 runners on base, including four in the final two innings.
Shaw bounced back from the home runs and recorded the third quality start by a Mets pitcher. He logged six innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out six.
Tortugas starter Ty Boyles held the Mets to one run and two hits in five innings while striking out eight.
John Mora extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in the ninth. That wouldn't be enough against Tanner Rainey, who struck out Wuilmer Becerra as the tying run to end the game.
The Mets (7-10) and Tortugas (9-8) conclude their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch at Jackie Robinson Ballpark is set for 5:35 p.m.
