Calgary Hitmen News Release
Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen today announced the Western Hockey League club has named Trent Cassan assistant coach. Cassan joins head coach Mark French, assistant coach Joel Otto and goaltending coach Jason LaBarbera to form the coaching staff for the 2016-17 season.
"Trent brings with him tremendous experience and knowledge in the development process of junior hockey players," said Mike Moore, Hitmen General Manager and Vice President of Business Operations. "He is a proven winner in the SJHL and we are excited to bring his championship pedigree to the Hitmen. He will be a terrific complement to Mark French and our coaching staff."
Cassan, 33, joins the Hitmen following six full seasons as general manager/head coach (2014-16) and associate general manager/head coach (2010-14) as well as a partial season as interim head coach (2009-10) with the Yorkton Terriers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. During this span, he compiled a record of 177-123-17-24 while advancing to the playoffs in all seven campaigns, including four league final berths. Under his guidance, the Terriers captured the club's first-ever RBC Cup as Canada's National Junior A champions in 2014 along with two Canalta Cups (2013 & 2014). Cassan, who has made two appearances at the World Junior A Challenge as both an assistant coach (2013) and head coach (2014) with Team Canada West, was the co-recipient of the SJHL's Coach of the Year award in 2012-13.
"I am very grateful and excited for the opportunity to join the Calgary Hitmen organization," said Cassan. "The chance to be able to work with such an experienced, well-respected hockey staff is something I am really looking forward to."
The Medora, Manitoba, native is a graduate of the NCAA's Division III SUNY Geneseo Knights (2004-08) and a Terriers alumnus (2001-04). His collegiate career was highlighted by back-to-back State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championship titles, the first in 2004-05. In addition, Cassan was named to the 2007 SUNYAC All-Academic team and SUNYAC All-Tournament team in 2006. He finished his senior year as team captain and received the club's 2007-08 Coaches Award. Prior to joining the Knights, Cassan spent three seasons with the Terriers where he was named the team's 2001-02 Rookie of the Year and recognized as the club's Playoff MVP in 2003 and 2004.
A media availability with Mike Moore will be held today at Flames Community Arenas (2390 47 Avenue SW) at 2:00 p.m.
