Calgary Hitmen News Release
Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club is proud to announce 22,722 stuff toys were collected at today's 14th annual Petro-Canada Teddy Bear Toss.
Brandon Kozun scored Calgary's first goal, 7:47 into the first period, prompting fans to unleash a furry spectacle by tossing their stuffed toys on the ice.
"The ongoing support of our fans for this event is heartwarming and shows their commitment to the community and to the Calgary Hitmen," said Hitmen Director of Business Operations Mike Moore.
"It is amazing how this hockey event has grown," said Dave Wilson, Retail Market Manager Petro-Canada. "From the first game 14 years ago when there were 1,500 bears to tonight's game when there were 22,722 bears collected. Petro-Canada is proud to be a part of this holiday tradition helping make Christmas a special time for many children regardless of their economic status."
The Hitmen set a franchise attendance record today for the largest Petro-Canada Teddy Bear Toss crowd with 18,105 fans.
The win was also Calgary's 11th straight and improves their Western Hockey League leading record to 24-4-1-0.
Bears collected are being distributed among almost 50 local charities including Calgary Interfaith Food Bank, Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie, Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter and The Salvation Army.
Several Hitmen players will also visit the Alberta Children's Hospital (2888 Shaganappi Trail NW) on Monday morning at 10:30 a.m.
