Hillcats Shatter Single-Season Attendance Mark

September 9, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Fans flocked to Lynchburg's City Stadium in record numbers in 2009 as the Hillcats single-season attendance record was shattered. Game one of the 2009 Carolina League Northern Division Championship Series enabled Lynchburg's season attendance to rise to an all-time high of 164,913. With at least one more home playoff game on the schedule, the Hillcats attendance will likely surpass 165,000.

Lynchburg's 2009 attendance breaks the previous single-season record of 164,413, which was set in 2007. The Hillcats have drawn more than 148,000 fans every season since the completion of the renovation of City Stadium in 2004. Lynchburg's success at the gate was due to a variety of factors, including a popular promotions schedule and a remarkable first half, in which the Hillcats captured the Northern Division title for the first time since 2005.

"It's very gratifying to set a new attendance record," said Hillcats Assistant General Manager Ronnie Roberts. "It shows that our staff has worked very hard with promotions and giveaways this season, and having a winning team in the first half contributed to our attendance."

In addition to traditional large draws such as Breast Cancer Awareness Night and the Fourth of July, Lynchburg attracted huge crowds for Aramis Ramirez Bobblehead giveaway night and Pirates Weekend on the weekend of August 14 through 16.

"The local fans and area residents realize we have a great asset in our community with a professional baseball team," Roberts said. "They know that we have a great place to bring family and friends and have a fun night that's very affordable."

Lynchburg's front office staff will seek to set a new attendance record next season.

"We thank all our fans and sponsors for a record-breaking season," Roberts said. "And we look forward to breaking another record in 2010."
