Hillcats Blanked Again, Fall 5-0

Lynchburg, VA- The Hillcats were shut out for the second straight game tonight falling to the Winston-Salem Dash 5-0. Levi Hyams and Kyle Kubitza both extended their hitting streaks to seven games, but were unable to help the 'Cats push a run across. The 'Cats have not scored in 20 straight innings now. Winston-Salem's offense was in fine form cranking out 10 hits, seven for extra bases in their series opening win.

Kevan Smith put the Dash (21-21, 59-53) on top in the first inning with a two-run homer off Hillcats (15-24, 51-57) starter Jarett Miller. Hillcats starting pitching had allowed just one earned run in their previous six games, but Miller struggled tonight. He allowed seven hits including two home runs and four doubles before his night ended after 4.1 innings.

A pair of doubles plated another Dash run in the fourth. Jeremy Farrell drove in Rangel Ravelo. The fourth and final run off of Miller (8-6) came in the fifth. Chris Curley hit his league-best 22nd home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center. Over a month after former Hillcats Robby Hefflinger's promotion to Double-A someone has passed his 21 homer mark in the Carolina League.

The Dash scored once more in the seventh inning courtesy of an errant throw from reliever Zach Jadofsky trying to get a force out at home.

Winston-Salem's starter Jake Cose completed seven innings tonight using 102 pitches (55 strikes). Cose (4-4) earned the win allowing just three hits, walking four, ansd striking out five.

The Hillcats drew four walks total on the night and collected four hits as well. They never had a runner reach third base in the shutout loss.

Game two of the series is set for tomorrow at 7pm at BB&T Ballpark. RHP Williams Perez (3-1, 0.75) will start for Lynchburg against RHP Bryan Blough (9-8, 4.48) for the Dash.
