Hicks rewarded for 200-yard day

April 27, 2004 - National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release

VETERAN NFL running back SKIP HICKS has been named NFL Europe Offensive Player of Week 4 following his outstanding performance for the Frankfurt Galaxy during their loss to the Amsterdam Admirals last Sunday.

Hicks, allocated to NFL Europe by the Cincinnati Bengals, rushed for 74 yards on 23 carries and added 7 receptions for 138 yards and a touchdown, scoring on a 72-yard catch and run as Frankfurt fell to a 21-17 overtime defeat in the Netherlands.

The 212 total yards gained by Hicks were the most by any player in NFL Europe this season. Through four games this season, Hicks has racked up 225 rushing yards (second in NFLEL) and 399 yards from scrimmage (second in NFLEL). He leads the league with 6 touchdowns and has also scored on a 56-yard run this season, displaying his big-play potential.

Defensive Player of the Week honors went to Berlin Thunder defensive end COREY SMITH, who was allocated to the two-time World Bowl champions by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

During Berlin's 14-10 defeat of the Rhein Fire, Smith recorded 4 tackles, 2 quarterback sacks for minus 33 yards and also forced a fumble. He jointly leads NFL Europe with 5 sacks this season and has helped Berlin get off to the best start in franchise history (4-0).

Smith said: "We put better pressure on Rhein's quarterbacks compared to some of our other games and I was able to bring a lot of heat from the outside which helped me get those sacks."

Smith is the third defensive end to win the Defensive Player of the Week prize in the opening month of the 2004 season. Frankfurt's Corey Jackson (Cleveland Browns) scooped the award in Weeks 1 and 3.

Amsterdam kicker TODD SIEVERS (Houston Texans) earned Special Teams Player of the Week recognition for the second week in a row after he nailed a game-winning 51-yard field goal worth four points as time expired at the end of overtime, giving the 2-2 Admirals a thrilling win over the Galaxy.

Sievers - who kicked a game-winning 44-yarder in Scotland the previous week - is the leading American kicker in NFL Europe this spring, scoring 15 points in four games.

Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS said: "We have a kicker in Todd who can hit the long field goals and that proved to be the case against the Galaxy. There was a lot that went into that kick. The snap had to be good, the hold had to be good and, of course, the kick had to be good. It was and I am excited for this team because they are a good bunch of kids. I think we are going to finish the season strong."

German safety RICHARD YANCY won National Player of the Week honors for his efforts during the Rhein Fire's loss at the hands of the Thunder. Yancy recorded his first career interception and ran the ball back 21 yards to set up Rhein's only touchdown of the game.

Yancy also added 2 tackles and knocked down a pass. The fifth-year veteran leads all national players in NFL Europe this season with 14 tackles and has also forced a fumble. Yancy last won Player of the Week honors in Week 3 of the 2000 season, when he played for the Thunder.

Fire head coach PETE KUHARCHEK said: "We expect Richard Yancy to make a lot of tackles and produce big plays because he is our starting strong safety. He is not on the field as a national player - he is out there as a defensive starter for this team."

Hicks and Yancy became the first Players of the Week in 2004 to have been on the losing side when picking up the weekly award.
