Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (11-11) couldn't hold onto a one-run lead entering the eighth, and fell below .500 at home this season after suffering a 3-2 loss at the hands of the Hickory Crawdads (14-8). The loss marks the first time this season that Hagerstown has lost a game it was leading after seven innings.
It was a two-run homerun by 3B Joey Gallo that gave Hickory the lead for good. His shot came with one out in the top of the eighth off of RHP Brian Dupra (1-2), who suffered the loss for the Suns. The homerun was Gallo's team-leading eighth of the season, and the 37th hit by the Crawdads this year.
Hagerstown had taken a 2-1 lead the half-inning prior to Gallo's homerun thanks to an RBI double off the bat of DH Wander Ramos. Shortstop Stephen Perez began the inning by reaching base on a missed catch error by Crawdads 1B Nick Vickerson. Perez was able to score from first on Ramos' double, which came with two outs in the frame.
The Suns first run was also an unearned run and came in the bottom of the third. Second baseman Tony Renda began that inning by hitting a double to center field. He moved to third on a groundout to short by Ramos, and scored with two outs on a fielding error by 2B Ryan Rua on a ground ball hit off the bat of 1B Shawn Pleffner.
That answered an unearned run put up by Hickory in the top of the second. Rua was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. Catcher Jorge Alfaro followed that up by hitting a double to left, which Suns LF Wes Schill was unable to handle cleanly, allowing Rua to score on the E7 and make it a 1-0 game.
Both starting pitchers threw well, as RHP Dixon Anderson got the starting nod for the Suns and lasted six innings, surrendering just one unearned run on four hits while walking one and striking out five. His counterpart, RHP C.J. Edwards, threw five innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits, walking two and striking out seven. RHP Jose Valdespina (1-0) earned the win, despite allowing the go-ahead run in the seventh. RHP Cody Kendall earned his fourth save of the year in four opportunites.
The Suns and Crawdads continue their four game series at Municipal Stadium on Saturday April 27. Hagerstown will send LHP Kylin Turnbull (0-0) to the mound for his first start of the season. He will square off against RHP Connor Sadzeck (2-0) for the Crawdads. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm.
