Portland Thorns FC News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Thorns FC midfielder Tobin Heath, goalkeeper Adrianna Franch and defender Meghan Klingenberg were named to the 26-player U.S. Women's National Team roster for the team's training camp set for Jan. 5-21 at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Carson, Calif., it was announced today.
In her third season for Thorns FC in 2015, Heath played in 12 matches (all starts), tallying a goal and an assist. Heath, who has 106 international caps, helped lead the U.S. Women's National Team to the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup title, tallying a goal in the United States' 5-2 win against Japan in the final on July 5. In 2015, Heath appeared in 21 matches (13 starts) for the United States, tallying a goal and three assists.
Acquired in a trade with the Orlando Pride on Dec. 10, 2015, Franch earns her first call-up to the U.S. Women's National Team since 2013. A NWSL Second XI selection in 2013 as a rookie with the Western New York Flash, Franch led the league in goals-against average (0.91) and saves (98). After missing the 2014 season with a knee injury, Franch played for Norwegian side Avaldsnes IL in 2015, appearing in 15 matches.
Klingenberg played the last two seasons (2014-15) with the Houston Dash and was acquired on Nov. 2, 2015, as part of trade with Orlando. A 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup All-Star selection, Klingenberg appeared in every match for the United States in its run to the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup title, making 26 appearances (23 starts) in 2015. Since making her debut in 2011, Klingenberg has earned 50 international caps.
A total of 18 players will be named to the roster as the United States plays its first match of 2016 against Ireland on Saturday, Jan. 23, at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif.; kickoff is set for 2 p.m. (Pacific) with a national television broadcast on FS1. Following the match, head coach Jill Ellis will name the roster for the 2016 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Championship.
