Heat Lend A Helping Hand With Community Corner
January 14, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Abbotsford Heat News Release
Abbotsford, BC - The Abbotsford Heat had a very successful week both on and off the ice. After posting back-to-back sellouts versus the Manitoba Moose, the Heat also contributed to the community off the ice through funds and awareness generated through the Community Corner program. Community Corner is a new Heat initiative that connects charity groups with the crowd in attendance at Heat home games. The program not only offers the charity the opportunity to showcase itself on the concourse, it also provides fundraising opportunities including a ticketing component whereby $3 from each ticket purchased through the program is rebated back to the respective charity of the game.
For the sold-out series versus the Manitoba Moose the Heat welcomed the BC Cancer Foundation for Tuesday's game and the C.H.I.L.D Foundation for Wednesday's match. The BC Cancer Foundation's volunteers also walked the concourse providing fans with purple cancer awareness bracelets by donation. Their efforts did not go unrewarded raising over $1,600 from bracelets alone. On Wednesday, the C.H.I.L.D Foundation was able to sell 172 tickets for their fundraising night along with collecting several donations from the very generous fans in attendance.
Gwen Ford, Vice President of Development for the CH.I.L.D. Foundation stated, "There's no question that the economy has greatly affected so many charities funding opportunities during this past year, so it's great that the Abbotsford Heat Hockey Team has provided a unique and very fun opportunity for charitable organizations to raise awareness and funding through its Community Corner". She said, "Community Corner provided us the opportunity to create greater awareness and raise funds for our researchers who are working every day to find a cure for the many children suffering from Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis and liver disorders, many of these fans here tonight will know someone who is suffering from these chronic disorders, and this is a great way for us to let these fans know that the CH.I.L.D. Foundation is conducting ongoing research at BC's Children's Hospital in order to find a cure, we're here to help". She went on to say, "Working with the Abbotsford Heat was a great experience, they're definitely here to assist the community and it was our pleasure to work with them and raise funds as well for our cause, in a very fun and entertaining atmosphere".
Upcoming Community Corner partners include The Arthritis Society, Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon, BCSPCA, BC Children's Hospital and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to name a few.
The Heat are back in action tomorrow night against the Lake Erie Monsters who sit four points behind the Heat in the AHL standings. The Colorado Avalanche affiliate will play both games against the Heat in the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre. Friday's game starts at 7:30 pm and Saturday's match up is a 4:00 pm start.
