Peoria Rivermen News Release

PEORIA, Ill - The Abbotsford Heat scored just 3:50 into the first period and never looked back in their 6-0 win over the Peoria Rivermen on Friday night at Carver Arena. David Shantz stopped all 27 Rivermen shots to earn the first shutout of the season against Peoria.

The loss stopped a streak of three consecutive wins for the Rivermen who dropped to 7-5-1-2 on the year.

A Rivermen turn-over in the slot gave Abbotsford an early 1-0 lead when Jason Jaffray picked up a loose puck and fired it between the legs of Ben Bishop for his seventh goal of the season. As the period wore on the Heat continued to pepper Bishop and Peter Vandermeer got his first goal of the season at 14:10. He gloved down an airborne puck in the slot and backhanded it around Bishop.

Physical play in the first led to three power plays for each team, but neither was able to capitalize. The power plays for both teams would struggle as the Rivermen finished 0-for-7 while the Heat converted on their ninth and final opportunity of the night.

It wasn't until late in the second that the Heat would add another goal to their total. After a draw, deep in the Rivermen zone, led to a shot on net and another loose rebound. David Van der Gulik was there this time to pick up the rebound for his second goal of the season. Mikael Backlund and Kris Chucko picked assists on the third Abbotsford goal of the night.

The early third period saw Abbotsford put their fourth goal of the night on the board at 4:04. Loose rebounds again cost the Rivermen as Jason Jaffray scored his second of the night off of a rebound generated by Cam Cunning. Moments later Colin Stuart would put the game out of reach with his fifth goal of the year giving Abbotsford a 5-0 lead. The Heat added a final tally at 18:31 of the 3rd. John Negrin would score his first goal of the season.

Bishop finished the night with 23 saves. It was the first time the Rivermen have been shutout since Feb. 22 of last season against Manitoba. It was the largest margin of loss the Rivermen have ever suffered against a Calgary Flames affiliate in the AHL.

The Rivermen wrap up their three game home stand on Saturday when the welcome in the Milwaukee Admirals at 7 p.m. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a Rivermen team calendar. Tickets are available at the Rivermen office, on the phone at 309-676-1040, or online at www.rivermen.net/tickets.
