10.30.09 - Worcester 2 - Bridgeport 1 - DCU Center

Dean Strong scored his first professional goal moments after the Sound Tigers tied the score at 1-1 midway through the third period as the Sharks defeated Bridgeport 2-1. Alex Stalock recorded the games #2 star as he made 25 saves in net for Worcester. Steven Zalewski scored a power play tally in the first period as the Sharks outshot the Sound Tigers 37-26.

10.31.09 - Worcester 1 - Manchester 4 - Verizon Wireless Arena

Dean Strong scored in his 2nd straight game but Jeff Zatkoff made 44 saves in net for the Manchester as the Sharks fell 4-1 on Halloween night. Brandon Mashinter fought Drew Bagnall in the 2nd period that saw Worcester outshot the Monarchs 21-10. Alex Stalock received his first professional loss making 27 saves in net for the Sharks.

11.01.09 - Worcester 4 - Springfield 1 - DCU Center

Head Coach Roy Sommer notched his 400th career win in the AHL in a fight-filled 4-1 affair against the Falcons in Worcester on Sunday afternoon. Andrew Desjardins and Steven Zalewski scored shorthanded tallies and Matt Jones scored on the power play for Worcester. Dan DaSilva added an empty net goal in a game that featured 144 penalty minutes. Frazer McLaren set a team record with 46 penalty minutes and Tyson Sexsmith made 14 saves in net for the Sharks for the victory.

Sharks in the Atlantic

The Sharks are currently swimming in 2nd place with 15 points (7-3-0-1) in the Atlantic Division trailing Manchester (19 points). The Sound Tigers are in 3rd place with 14 points, followed by the Falcons in 4th place with 13 points. The Devils and Wolf Pack are tied in 5th with 12 points a piece. The Bruins (11 points) and the Pirates (8 points) round out the eight team division in a very choppy Atlantic Division. The Sharks have the 2nd best winning percentage in the Eastern Conference at.682%.

*400 WINS!....With the victory vs. Springfield, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4th coach in AHL history to reach the 400 win plateau.

*Worcester Sharks Head Coach Roy Sommer, who plays a major role in developing players for the San Jose Sharks, is currently the longest-tenured coach (12th season) in the American Hockey League. His current regular season record after the win is now: 400-380-54-57.

*In Coach Sommer's first AHL victory.... The Kentucky Thoroughblades defeated the Albany River Rats 6-4 at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky on October 17th 1998. Coincidentally, Assistant Coach David Cunniff recorded an assist as a member of the River Rats in the hockey game.

*Assistant Coach David Cunniff has joined Coach Sommer in 243 of the 400 victories.

Shark Bites:

*Captains for the 2009-10 season: Captain Ryan Vesce (2nd year), Assistant Captains Derek Joslin (2nd year) and Mike Moore (1st year).

* October was nice.... The Sharks went 6-3-0-1 in October (31GF, 31GA)

*Shorty's... the Sharks scored their first two shorthanded goals (Desjardins and Zalewski) of the season in the 4-1 win vs. Springfield on Sunday. It was the first time in team history that three shorthanded goals were scored in a Sharks game (SPR scored one). Zalewski's SHG was his 4th of his career tying him with Lukas Kaspar and Tom Cavanagh for the tops in franchise history.

*From east to west..... The Sharks already have SIX players that heave seen action to both the AHL and NHL this season (McLaren, Zalewski, Vesce, Joslin, McGinn, and Couture ). The Sharks had 11 players accomplish that feat last season.

*You always remember your first..... Dennis McCauley (10/10), John McCarthy (10/9), Brandon Mashinter (10/9), Logan Couture (10/10), and Dean Strong (10/30) have all scored their first professional regular goals this season.

*OT Killers.... The Sharks are 2-0 in OT this season after going 7-1 last year in the overtime period.

*Young Guns....The average age of the Sharks roster is 23 which includes 12 rookies, five 2nd year players and two third year players. At the age of 28, Danny Groulx is the oldest while Nicholas Petrecki at 20 years old and three months is the youngest.

*Take the college or juniors route....the Sharks have 13 players from the college ranks (seven from hockey east), nine from juniors and two players that played in both.

*Massachusetts... The Sharks have four players born and raised in Massachusetts (John McCarthy - Andover, Corey Quirk - Brockton, Dennis McCauley - Billerica, and Joe Callahan - Brockton)

*Streakers... Logan Couture has a five game point streak (4-5-9).

*All four years....Defenseman Derek Joslin is the only Sharks player to suit up in all four seasons in Worcester.

*Can't score if you don't shoot.... The Sharks lead the AHL with 36.91 shots per game and have outshot the Falcons 81-33 in two games this season.

*Follow the leaders.... Danny Groulx leads the AHL with 11 assists.... Logan Couture leads the AHL with 3 game winning goals and is 5th in rookie scoring (4-6-10) in just seven games played....Brandon Mashinter is 2nd among AHL rookies with four fighting majors.

*Early risers.... The Sharks have scored first in nine of eleven games this season. Worcester is 7-1-0-1 when lighting the lamp first.

*Five for fighting...The Sharks have 13 fighting major penalties this season through 11 games... (Brandon Mashinter 4, Dennis McCauley 3, Frazer McLaren 3, Joe Loprieno 2, Nicholas Petrecki 1). The Sharks had 78 fighting majors last season, 68 fighting majors in 2007-08 and 54 in 2006-07.

*Sin Bin Take 1... Frazer McLaren set a team record with 46 minutes of penalties vs. Springfield on Sunday. Frazer received three minors, two majors, one misconduct, and two game misconducts.

*Sin Bin Take 2... The Sharks set a team record at home with 78 penalty minutes at the DCU Center on Sunday. Worcester received 17 infractions: 9 minors, 4 majors, 1 misconduct, and 3 game misconducts.

The San Jose Sharks are 10-4-0-1 with 21 points in the NHL this season and are currently in 1st place in the Pacific Division.

Ryan Vesce has a four game point streak (3-1-4) but has missed the last four games due to injury. Jason Demers has ten points (0-10-10) and leads the team with a +7 through 15 games. Brad Staubitz has two goals and a fighting major through nine games. Former Worcester Shark Devin Setoguchi has nine points (7-2-9) through eleven games.
