Hawks Take Nine Monday

Waterloo, Iowa-The Waterloo Black Hawks selected nine young prospects during Phase I of the United States Hockey League Draft on Monday evening.

The group included six forwards, two defensemen, and one goaltender, each born in 2001. Some of the players selected on Monday may have the opportunity to compete for 2017/18 Black Hawks roster spots. Others will be added to the organization's 18-man affiliate list for consideration in future years.

The Hawks chose forward Patrick Guzzo in the opening round with the 15th overall pick. Guzzo spent last season with Detroit Little Caesar's U16 squad. The University of Michigan recruit turns 16 in November, but already stands at 6' 2" and checks in at 175 pounds.

Phase II of the USHL Draft will be conducted on Tuesday. This portion of the draft is open to players of all ages eligible to play junior hockey who are not currently protected by another USHL team.

Meanwhile, the Hawks continue their 2017 Clark Cup Western Conference Final Series on Friday and Saturday against the Sioux City Musketeers. The best-of-five affair is currently tied at one win apiece.
