Hawks' Jeremy Papelbon Named Winner in Close "Papel-Bet" Between Twin Papelbon Hurlers

Boise Hawks News Release

Boise, ID - Not every Papelbon can record an ERA under 1.00 like Red Sox closer Jonathan in Boston. Younger brothers Joshua and Jeremy came pretty close, posting 1.86 and 1.74 ERA's in their professional debuts with the Lowell Spinners, Class A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, and the Boise Hawks, Class A Affiliate of the Chicago Cubs in 2006, respectively.

With an ERA 12-hundreths of a point lower than Joshua's, Jeremy was named winner of the Papelbon Papel-Bet, launched by the Hawks and Spinners in August, which pitted the Papelbon twins against each other in a friendly wager based on their season-ending ERA's.

As part of the Papelbon Papel-Bet, the team featuring the Papelbon with the higher ERA would make a contribution to Jeremy's charity of choice with the amount of the donation determined by the difference in the twins' ERA's.

With similarly stellar ERA's under 2.00, the Spinners owe Jeremy's charity of choice, St. Alphonsus Foundation Women's Healthcare Fund, only $12. But the Spinners announced today that they will increase the donation to Jeremy's charity.

"The charity shouldn't be penalized because both Jeremy and Joshua pitched so well," said Tim Bawmann, General Manager of the Lowell Spinners. "That's why we're making a $150 donation in his name. We're proud of the season Joshua had here, and we're proud of all of the Papelbons pitching in Boston, Lowell, and Boise."

"We're excited the Papelbon brothers had such a fantastic season," said Hawks' President/General Manager Todd Rahr. "But we're even more thrilled to use this friendly competition as a way to further our efforts to Strike Out Breast Cancer. It's extremely gratifying to help out with such a worthy cause."

Joshua finished the season fifth in the New York-Penn League with 13 saves and struck out 36 batters in 29.0 innings while walking only six with Lowell. Jeremy was named to the Northwest League All-Star team and made a scoreless appearance in the Boise Hawks playoff run.

The Hawks just completed their 20th Anniversary Season of Northwest League play. The club has won 6 NWL Championships, the most recent banner coming in 2004. Season, mini-pack, and single game tickets for Hawks' games are available at 322-5000. For more information, please visit www.boisehawks.com. This is My HawksNation!
