Hawks Fall 3-2 in Game 1 of the WHL Final

The Portland Winterhawks fell 3-2 Thursday in Game 1 of the WHL Final in Edmonton.

The Oil Kings opened the scoring 1:25 into the game on a goal by Rhett Rachinski, the lone goal of the first period.

Edmonton made it 2-0 at the 4:59 mark of the second on a goal by Martin Gernat. The Oil Kings' Jordan Peddle scored at the 14:30 mark to make it 3-0, but just 12 seconds later Marcel Noebels scored a power play goal to cut the deficit to 3-1. Sven Bartschi then scored his eighth of the playoffs at the 16:39 mark to cut the deficit to 3-2 going into the third period.

The two teams battled throughout an evenly played third period, but the Oil Kings hung on to come away with the 3-2 win.

The Hawks were 1-3 on the power play and 5-5 on the penalty kill.

Mac Carruth made 26 saves on 29 shots, while Edmonton's Laurent Brossoit stopped stopped 24 of the 26 Portland shots.

Game 2 of the series is tomorrow at 6 p.m. local time.
