Hawks Downed at Home

March 8, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

After combining for 53 goals in their first six matchups, the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders edged the Waterloo Black Hawks in a low-scoring, 2-1 contest at Young Arena Friday.

Jack Rowe recorded the only marker of the opening period, taking a pass from across the slot which originated from Davey Middleton during a two-on-two rush at 1:55. Cedar Rapids appeared to make it 2-0 at 13:44 when Mark Auk flipped a shot into an open goal, but the gaping net was only available because of a goaltender interference infraction by Andrew Poturalski.

Waterloo and Cedar Rapids exchanged goals in the second, beginning with a score by Justin Kloos at 2:20. With the play created behind the RoughRider net, Kloos fired a shot from the left wing circle high to the short side. However, Cedar Rapids went back ahead on a power play at 10:38, on a score from a similar angle by Dylan Gareau.

That tally proved to be the winner. It was the second decisive score by Gareau against the Hawks in less than a week; last Saturday he notched the third goal in the RoughRiders 6-2 win at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

The Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup schedule continues Saturday as the Black Hawks meet the Dubuque Fighting Saints, the other team vying for the title of "best team in eastern Iowa," on the road at Mystique Ice Center. Waterloo's next home game at Young Arena is Friday, March 15th versus the Lincoln Stars.
