Hamilton and Perez Key Bats' 3-0 Shutout of Indy

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - On a sun-drenched afternoon with Thunder Over Louisville festivities buzzing around Louisville Slugger Field, the Louisville Bats (9-7) treated more than 11,000 fans to a 3-0 shutout of the Indianapolis Indians (11-6).
The third inning was the difference in the game, as Billy Hamilton and Felix Perez led the way with timely hitting to drive in all three of the Bats' runs on the afternoon.
Hamilton also stole his International League-leading 11th base of the season in the fifth inning, extending his current streak of games with a stolen base to four.
Supporting the effort at the plate was an impressive day on the mound from the Bats pitching staff. Chad Reineke (W, 3-0) threw 5.2 shutout innings in his first start of 2013 for the Bats, striking out five and walking two while scattering five hits. The Louisville bullpen took it the rest of the way, shutting out the Indians and preserving the 3-0 lead.
Saturday was a banner day of sorts for Josh Fellhauer, who went 2-3 at the plate while registering a run and stealing a base. Fellhauer contributed defensively as well from right field, throwing out Indianapolis' Jordy Mercer at third base after he tried to reach from first on a Brandon Inge single. The assist was crucial to averting an Indians threat in their half of the third inning.
In the bottom of the third, the Bats struck first for the only runs of the ballgame. After back-to-back singles from Fellhauer and Konrad Schmidt and a passed ball put runners on second and third with one out, Hamilton singled home Fellhauer to take a 1-0 lead. The RBI on Hamilton's first hit of the series was his third of the season. Perez kept the train rolling with a double off of the right field wall that scored Schmidt and Hamilton. Perez now has eight RBIs on the season.
After scoring first on Saturday and securing the victory, Louisville is now a perfect 9-0 on the season when they are the first to cross the plate.
Despite the Bats' three-run third inning, Indianapolis starter Brandon Cumpton (L, 0-1) posted a quality start on the afternoon with three earned runs on five hits and one walk, striking out eight in his six innings of work.
After Clay Hensley and Justin Freeman both registered holds for Louisville in their combined 2.1 innings of work, Kevin Whelan came on in the ninth to strike out the side and register his third save of the season.
The Bats will hit the road to meet Indianapolis tomorrow afternoon at Victory Field, continuing their five-game split series against the Indians. Yohan Pino (0-0, 0.00) is scheduled to make his first start as a Louisville Bat against Indians righty Gerrit Cole (0-1, 6.00).
