HALAMA BLANKS SKEETERS IN 8-0 WIN

August 23, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

John Halama fired his first complete game shutout of the season, blanking the Sugar Land Skeeters on seven hits, as the Lancaster Barnstormers gained a split of the four-game series with the Skeeters, 8-0, Thursday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

As a result, Lancaster held onto its 1 1/2 game lead over the York Revolution in the Freedom Division's second half.

The 40-year old left-hander walked just one and struck out two. He needed only 99 pitches to get through the evening to improve his record to 10-7.

He had his only problematic inning in the second. Steve Moss doubled to right center with one out but tried to take third on Matt Hagen's grounder to short. Kyle Haines cut him down, and the Skeeters lost a key base in the exchange. Amadeo Zazueta followed with a double into the right field corner, but Sugar Land was forced to hold Hagen at third. Sugar Land had designs on a pair of runs as Octavio Martinez hit a ground up the middle, but second baseman Gilberto Mejia flashed to his right, threw from midair and got the out at first to end the inning.

Halama did not have two runners on base again until the ninth when Hagen singled with two outs, and Zazueta reached on an error.

Tim Redding (1-1) checked the Barnstormers on only two hits for 4 2/3 innings before the bottom of the order got to the ex-big league right-hander. Travis Denker lined a single into right center and took third on a double into the right field corner by Bridger Hunt. Haines then unloaded a three-run homer, his first long ball in a Lancaster jersey and 11th of his career, for a 3-0 lead.

Mejia singled, took third on a bad pickoff throw and raced home on a sacrifice fly by Blake Gailen in the sixth. Lancaster's final four runs came in the eighth as Dustin Richardson loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter. Ryan Harvey's ground ball brought home one run before Denker blasted his third Atlantic League homer to cap the scoring.

Lancaster hosts the Long Island Ducks on Friday evening. The game will feature a rematch of Sunday afternoon's contest when both J.D. Durbin (9-9) and Chris McCoy (1-0, 2-0) went the distance in a Long Island win. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:45.
