Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD-Hagerstown blew open a 3-3 game and held on to beat Lakewood 7-6 in the first of three on Monday night.
Hagerstown (27-36) had lost 9 of their previous 12 games, and the teams combined for 8 errors (4 each) in the game. Only 1 of Lakewood's 6 runs was earned.
The BlueClaws made it quite interesting with 3 runs in the 8th inning off of reliever Joe Welsh. Kevin Howard, who drove in 7 on Sunday, had an RBI single, and later in the frame, Tuffy Gosewisch drove in a run on a groundout. On that play, third baseman Leonard Davis threw behind Gus Milner at 2nd and the ball went into the outfield, and Milner scored to cut the lead to one.
In the 9th, Julian Williams picked up a 1-out single off of closer Josh Wilkie, who then struck out Fidel Hernandez and Adrian Cardenas grounded to short to end the game.
Chris Marrero's home run off of Carlos Monasterios (6- 5) broke a 3-3 tie leading off in the 3rd inning. It was his 14th of the year, and puts him into a tie for 2nd in the league.
The Suns added 2 runs off the Lakewood starter in the 5th, including an RBI double by Leonard Davis, and added another in the 6th when Justin Maxwell scored from 3rd on a passed ball.
Monasterios allowed 6 runs, 5 earned, over 4.2 IP. He walked 6 and struck out 2. He came into the game having won 4 of his last 5 starts.
Meanwhile, Lakewood (30-31) couldn't solve lefty Cory VanAllen, who allowed just 3 unearned runs over 7 innings of work to improve to 1-3. VanAllen did not walk a batter and struck out 4. He's walked just 6 batters in 54.2 IP this season.
Trailing 3-0, the BlueClaws tied the game with 3 runs in the 3rd inning. Fidel Hernandez had an RBI single and 2 runs scored on a dropped throw by first baseman Brett McMillan.
Julian Williams was 4-5 for the BlueClaws and has reached base in 15 of his last 19 plate appearances.
The series continues Tuesday night at 7:05, as Lakewood sends Kyle Drabek (5-1, 4.17) to the mound against Hagerstown's Erik Arnesen (3-2, 5.09). It will be Drabek's first start since May 26th. He had been on the DL with right elbow inflammation.
