Hackett Leads Aeros over Marlies with 2-1 Shootout Win

Toronto, ON - The Houston Aeros (27-19-4-3, 61 points) defeated the Toronto Marlies (26-17-2-3, 57 points) 2-1 in a shootout on Monday afternoon in front of 7,260 fans at Ricoh Coliseum. Goalie Matt Hackett (17-17-3) made 25 saves on 26 shots in regulation and he stopped four of five attempts for the shootout win. Forward Chad Rau scored the team's lone goal in regulation, helping Houston improve to 5-2-0-0 on its eight-game road trip. Aeros David McIntyre and Nick Petersen each scored in the shootout, with Petersen getting the decisive tally in the fifth round of the shootout. Toronto goalie Drew MacIntyre (1-0-1) stopped 12 of 13 in regulation and three of five attempts in the shootout defeat, as the Aeros moved to to 14-11-2-1 on the road. Houston will end its eight-game road trip in Oklahoma City, taking on the Barons on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Cox Convention Center.

After two scoreless periods, Houston opened the scoring at 9:24 of the third period. Center Chad Rau found a loose puck in the high slot and snapped a shot past Drew MacIntyre for the 1-0 lead. Defenseman Kyle Medvec played the puck to the slot for Rau, who broke a stretch of 49:24 of scoreless play with his seventh goal of the year. Toronto countered to tie the game 1-1 at 14:42. Forward Tim Connolly picked up the puck off the end wall in the Houston zone and stuffed it inside the Aeros net. His fifth goal of the season was set up by Jake Gardiner and Jesse Blacker.

The two teams skated through a scoreless overtime, setting up the shootout. The first three rounds were scoreless before Toronto claimed a 1-0 lead with Spencer Abbott's shootout goal. Houston countered with a goal by David McIntyre just before Matt Hackett stopped Mike Zigomanis. In the fifth round of the shootout, Nick Petersen snapped a shot five-hole on MacIntyre for sudden death shootout win.

Houston ends its eight-game road trip on Friday, Feb. 22 in Oklahoma City at 7 p.m. The Aeros return home on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7:05 p.m. as Houston hosts Oklahoma City at Toyota Center. The team will celebrate Boy Scout Night by handing out 2012-13 team posters to the first 2,000 fans, compliments of Warehouse Pool Supply.
