Gwinnett Stripers News Release

SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs (45-50) rallied from a 4-3 deficit to beat the Gwinnett Braves (41-55) by a 7-4 score Monday night in game one of the three-game series at NBT Bank Stadium.

The loss, the seventh in a row for the G-Braves, equals their season high losing streak (May 31st to June 7th).

In the top of the first, off Syracuse starter Jaron Long, Emilio Bonifacio led off with a double to right and scored from second on a single to right-center by Omar Infante for a quick 1-0 lead.

Syracuse struck quickly to tie the game, as Brian Goodwin hit a solo home run with one out in the first against Gwinnett starting pitcher Roberto Hernandez.

The Chiefs took the lead in the second with two outs when Zach Collier singled to center and scored on a triple by Jason Martinson. One batter later, Martinson later scored on a throwing error by Gwinnett third baseman Rio Ruiz to push the Syracuse lead to 3-1.

The G-Braves fought back in the top of the third as Infante greeted Long with a double off the wall in left and scored on a double to right by Reid Brignac cutting the Chiefs lead to 3-2. A Ronnier Mustelier single moved Brignac to third and a wild pitch by Long enabled Mustelier to take second. Mel Rojas, Jr. then grounded out to second, pushing across Brignac with the tying run and then Ruiz followed with a single off the glove of Syracuse first baseman Matt Skole, scoring Mustelier for a 4-3 lead.

That, however, was the last run Gwinnett scored on the night.

In the bottom of the fourth, Hernandez walked Matt den Dekker, who then stole second base. A single to left by Pedro Severino moved den Dekker to third and he scored the tying run when Collier hit into a double play.

An inning later, Syracuse broke the 4-4 tie as Steve Lombardozzi tripled to right-center and scored on a two-out single by Christopher Bostick.

Syracuse added to the 5-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth as Martinson hit a two-run homer off Gwinnett reliever Maikel Cleto for his eighth home run of the season.

In his first start for the G-Braves, Hernandez (L, 4-5) tossed 4.2 innings allowing six hits and five runs (four earned) while walking two and striking out four. Matt Marksberry struck out one over 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, while Bradley Roney allowed a hit and a walk while striking out the side in his 1.0 inning. Cleto worked the bottom of the eighth, allowing Martinson's home run and a Severino single while striking out a batter.

Long (W, 2-3) picked up the win by scattering eight hits and four runs over 6.0 innings while striking out seven and walking one. Erik Davis, Matt Grace and Radael Martin worked scoreless innings of relief each, with Martin collecting his 18th save of the season in a perfect ninth.

Infante went 3-for-5 with a run, a double and an RBI and Ruiz was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI for the G-Braves.

Lombardozzi, Severino and Martinson each went 2-for-4 for the Chiefs.

The G-Braves and Chiefs play game two of the three-game series Tuesday night in Syracuse. Righty Casey Kelly (2-5, 3.90) will start for Gwinnett against right-hander Lucas Giolito for Syracuse, who makes his Triple-A debut. First pitch is schedule for 6:35 p.m. and Tony Schiavone will have the broadcast of the game beginning at 6:05 p.m. on 97.7 FM.
