Gutierrez Fans 10 in Lugnuts Win

BOWLING GREEN, Ky . - Osman Gutierrez struck out 10 batters in seven dominant innings, and the Lansing Lugnuts (16-23, 53-52) shut out the Bowling Green Hot Rods (22-16, 53-52), 8-0, on Wedn esday night at Bowling Green Ballpark .

It was the Lugnuts' sixth shutout victory of 2017, their first since May 31st .

The 22-year-old Gutierrez (Win, 4-8) opened the first inning by allowing two singles and a walk, loading the bases with none out. He then struck out Jesus Sanchez and Robbie Tenerowicz and induced a flyout from Miles Mastrobuoni, stranding the bases loaded.

From that point on, the Nicaraguan right-hander was in command. He set down 21 of 23 Hot Rods from the first inning through the seventh inning, striking out top prospect Jesus Sanchez three times. In the process, he tied his professional high for longest start and set a new high for strikeouts.

His teammates handled the rest, scoring two runs in the third, two in the fourth and three runs in the fifth against Hot Rods starter J.D. Busfield (Loss, 4-8). 1-2-3 batters Rodrigo Orozco (1-3, 2 walks, 2 runs), Edward Olivares (3-5, 2 runs, double, RBI) and Nash Knight (2-4, run, 2 RBI, walk) each reached base three times.

Denis Diaz pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits and striking out two in completing the strikeout.

The game was delayed 55 minutes before first pitch by rain.

All-Star Justin Maese (5-2, 4.24) makes his return to the mound in the second game of the three-game series, set for 7:35 p.m. Thursday. Bowling Green counters with southpaw Kenny Rosenberg (4-6, 4.56).
