Norfolk Tides News Release

Norfolk used a strong start from Joe Gunkel and three runs batted in from Paul Janish to edge the Durham Bulls 5-4 Thursday evening at Harbor Park.

Gunkel (5-5) scattered eight hits and allowed two runs over 6.1 innings to pick up the victory - his fifth win in eight starts since May 22. He struck out two without issuing a walk and threw 55 of his 88 pitches for strikes, helping Norfolk earn its fourth win over the last five games.

Gunkel's five wins since May 22 are tied for the second-most in the International League.

Janish got the Tides on the board with a two-run single in the second inning, then helped extend Norfolk's lead to 5-0 in the fifth frame when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Janish, who entered the game with just two RBI in 25 games with the Tides, also added an eighth inning double and has now hit .294 (5-17) in five games since being outrighted to Norfolk from Baltimore on June 25.

Durham got on the board in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Richie Shaffer, then plated three runs in the seventh frame off of Gunkel and Zach Phillips to pull within 5-4. Pedro Beato got out of the threat in the seventh and then worked a scoreless eighth before giving way to Jason Stoffel, who struck out the side in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

Dariel Alvarez extended his hitting streak to eight games with an RBI double in the contest - his league-leading 21st double of the season. The double was his 62nd career double with Norfolk, surpassing Brandon Snyder's 61 doubles for the most by a Tides player since Norfolk became an Orioles affiliate in 2007.

With the victory, Norfolk has now won six of its last seven games against Durham, including five straight at Harbor Park.

The two clubs continue their series Friday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:05. Andy Oliver (0-1, 3.05) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Jake Faria (0-0, 0.00).

On Friday, the first 5,000 fans entering Harbor Park will receive a Tides camouflage hat courtesy of your Local Ford Dealers and Fox 43. The Tides will also be hosting a Home Run for Life event Friday evening, an initiative to help curb prostate cancer.
