Guggenberger, Aces Offense Shine in 6-1 Win over Grizzlies
February 18, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
Mark Guggenberger stopped a career-high 50 shots and the Alaska Aces offense scored six times for the second straight game as the Aces beat the Utah Grizzlies 6-1 on Monday afternoon from the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah. The Aces extended their lead for the most points in the ECHL to five points over the idle Ontario Reign. Alaska extended their point streak to ten games and their road point streak to seven games. The Aces improved their record to a league-best 37-11-6 on the year. The Aces and Grizzlies conclude their four-game week and 14-game season series on Wednesday night at 5:05pm AKT. Alaska then returns home to host the Las Vegas Wranglers in three straight Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. All Aces games can be heard on NewsTalk 103.7FM and 750AM KFQD. The first period was largely controlled by the Grizzlies who peppered the Alaska net with an ECHL season-high 24 shots in the frame. But Mark Guggenberger was terrific, and kept Utah at bay for most of the period. Utah finally solved the Aces netminder on the most ironic of plays. After Guggenberger made one tough stop after another, former Alaska forward Kory Falite wristed an unscreened floater from the blue line that somehow sailed past the glove of Guggenberger and into the net for the first goal at 17:05, giving the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead. However, Alaska responded with a flurry of three goals in just over two minutes to turn the game around. Jordan Kremyr got the first on a rebound at 17:38, just 33 seconds after the Utah tally. It was Kremyr's second straight game with a goal. Then 59 seconds later B.J. Crum scored on a wrist shot from the left circle for his second goal of the year to give Alaska a 2-1 lead. In the final minute of the period, Spencer Bennett scored at 19:43 to lead the Aces to a 3-1 advantage at first intermission, despite being outshot 24-12 in the period. Guggenberger's 23 first period saves were the most by any ECHL goaltender this season.
Guggenberger was terrific again in the second period, stopping another 15 shots as the frame went scoreless. Utah outshot Alaska 15-13 in the period, and the Aces kept their 3-1 lead heading into the third period.
The Aces pulled away in the third period, thanks in part to a momentum-crushing goal from Alaska forward Nick Mazzolini. With the Aces leading 3-1, Utah went on a two-man advantage, but Mazzolini poked the puck away from Mitch Wahl and raced down the ice for a shorthanded breakaway goal. Garry Nunn followed that with a power play goal to snap an eight-game goal drought, and Bennett added his second goal of the game on a power play to give the Aces their second straight six-goal performance.
Mark Guggenberger (19-6-5) made 50 saves on 51 shots for the win. Adam Morrison (2-7-2) made 35 saves on 41 shots in the loss. The Aces went 2-7 on the power play and the Grizzlies were 0-7. Alaska was outshot by Utah 51-41 in the game.
